Wondering what cam to go for in my mini. This is a second hand engine I have bought but it requires a cam.

1330, Forged Omega's, lightened and balanced rods, cross-drilled, balanced and hardened crank, duplex timing gear with vernier adjustment, cylinder head- VMax Scart 29cc chambers, 1.5 roller rockers, 7.5:1 compression, T3 turbo (for now), turbo dizzy (for now) and as yet not found an inter-cooler the right size to fit behind the grill, I don't want holes in the bonnet so restricted on size a bit, but main thing is a good cam.

Gearbox has straight cut drops, 3.44FD 4 pin diff and central oil pick up.

The car will be used for weekend road use (mainly B roads) and the occasional run down the strip.

I was looking at an Avonbar phase 2 but just wondering if any more can be got from this engine with anything else. I will be going megajolt and a different turbo before running silly boost, just dont want to rebuild everything again.

Cheers guys

I have got fairly good results using the sw5 on a mildly tuned engine with conservative boost levels. Most peope rate the phase 2 as one of the best turbo cams, i have one for my next build

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

Its a. Phase 2 all the way, ditch those 1.5 rockers and use 1.3 with that cam or ithe power curve. Will be quite peaky at various points in te power curve

Remember an intercooler is not the icing on the cake. . ... ITS MORE! CAKE

First things first I would up the compression, 7.5:1 is going to feel very sluggish.

Phase2 in mine is brill.

What do you class as fairly good results? I'm considering the SW5 on a mild mannered Turbo engine am currently building.

I have a phase 2 in my car, it seems very good, revs well, pulls full throttle from 2k, but not as civilised as the MG Metro Cam.

Standard non turbo metro bottom end, sw5 cam, worked head by turbo phil, 2wd cossie intercooler, standard t3 and manifolds, compression about 8.7:1, 10 psi of boost, 130 bhp, 130 pounds of torque

Am I right or wrong in thinking if I keep the compression lower I can run more boost? Not bothered about it being a little sluggish
As long as it goes like a scalded cat when on boost!
Also how would you raise compression.?

Yes that's true, but unless you plan on running 40psi there is no need for it to be that low, 7.5:1 is very, very low. You could raise that to 8.5: , and with an efficient intercooler and well set up, could still run 20psi, which is more than enough.

If its all built up, the easiest way would be to skim the head, although not sure by how much could be skimmed off, and how much difference it would make. Alternatively you could skim the block face too.

Intercooler sounds like the way to go seeing as I don't have one . Still very new to turbos. 20Psi is what I'd like tho

I wouldn't expect 20 psi without an intercooler to end well...

You NEED an intercooler for 20psi, might get away with it with 7.5:1 *Rofl!* but it will be shit there's a reason every modern turbocharged car use an intercooler

As I said in the first post I will be fitting an intercooler. Have every intention of fitting one before starting the engine. Lol...

Benny, on my yellow monster I run a compression of 7.36:1 low I admit. .. a little lame off boost but its balistic. Ass ripping

A good intercooler is what's requiread as a must on your shopping list

7.36:1?? What boost are you using Steve?

For reference, I'm using up to 22psi on 8.69:1.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

To answer you're original question. Go for a phase 2.

Back in 97 when it first appeared I put an SW5 into mine with 1.5 rockers.

Being very low tech mine was also around 7.5:1

But the SW5 cam was very smooth, very tractable and would pull very nicely in 4th gear from 1000rpm if you wanted and was happy to rev to 7500rpm
I was using a bit over 20psi etc etc

Cant say I drove the car much after that and it's now lying in a pile of rust lol Sad really, it was my pride and joy once !
