Trying to upload the new firmware to my ECU in another car but having problems.

doubt its hyperterminal if your getting a connection in the first place? Are you sure the connection settings are correct? flow control etc. hit enter a free more times or re-connect? You can try this using putty which i find more realiable!

I have followed the settings given, tried lots of times to reconnect. Will instructions be the same for putty? |

yep, assuming your connecting through com1. are you using a serial connection directly or through a usb to serial converter? "Cars are a lifetime of pain" |

the ECU has a usb cable built into the board. Connectng through com 5 |

does it drop the connection in your laptop hardware?
