Looking for some advice. Been Toying with ideas on how to improve my air intake to the turbo.

Really keen on the idea of an airbox under the wing. Having had a trawl through photos I see the ERA Turbo minis have a hole cut in the inner wing. Seems to be the best solution to getting the filter away from the heat. However, rather worried about cutting a hole through my inner wing for structural reasons. Anyone any idea if there was some sort of bracing required on the original setup? Or will it not affect it in the slightest?

It could be an idea. How would you stop water being taken into the inlet? Also the fan dumps all if the heat under the pas wing from the cooling system

Was tempted in making up / using an airbox which has a duct from the front grille where the heater intake used to be. You can also get waterproof filter socks but they are a bit mehh.imho.lol

Don't like the filter sitting so close to the turbo at the back....

I think ERA turbo's run the Air intake to the cab through its air box first then into the cab I'm not 100% sure on that though!

I see no structual problems cutting a hole in the inner wing. But if you are still not convinced, you could flare the hole :)
I am more concerned about the water and hot air :)

Yeah, I was thinking about that or bolting a flange to each side with tube as a take off for the hose. Bit overkill maybe.

Yeah, the hot air as mentioned above isn't great but surely better off than being at the back of the engine? Plus an airbox would surely help insulate the filter from the hot air and in addition to that theres the cool air feed from up front.

Didn't the Mira tests show the cols air was getting to the back of engine providing that you didn't use a raised bonnet?

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

I think matty used to have his air filter under the wing until he went through a water splash and hydrolocked the engine *hehe!*

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I have an ERA airbox on my rustbox. It goes into a largish airbox that takes an XR3i air filter. There is a spout at the front and I routed this down to the front grill area that used to be the air intake for the vent on the passenger side cabin.

So despite the fan blowing hot air into the wing area, the airbox always takes in fresh cold air, and any heating would be negligable. And it makes the intake nice and quiet.

I wouldnt be concerned at all about any structural issues.

Back when I got it, any Rover/Leyland/Unipart parts shop could order them in ! I was lucky they had the ERA microfiche

Any more on this? Didn't the ERA have a bonnet vent at the rear of the bonnet? Would that have caused a flow of cool air therefore air temps would stay lower?

This is how I imagined it to work. I was just going to use an aftermarket airbox instead.

Love this setup, looks great, however, I don't have a flip front. :( Alright for some!lol.

You dont need a flip front to cut a couple of holes.

Although I wouldnt be placing right angles like that on my intake.

Cant think of any OEM airboxes that would fit on a mini. The ERA's was obviously made to fit, although it isnt exactly a complicated piece.

From a personal point of view and referring to the right angles on the air intake I'm not looking to drag race it down Santa pod, I was striving for a neat job with a moderate turbo output so a little bit of drag here and there dosent concern me, It is my first attempt at the turbo game and will probably make some changes to the intake in the future, not saying your not right about the drag factor but some times a compromise has to be made for your own personal reasons, every one to there own..
