Hi All,

When I went to start the car today it didnt start first time (nothing new there) but when i turned the ignition key back to off it kept on trying to start. It did start but then I was unable to stop the engine running! the only way to stop it was to disconnect the battery. Now when I reconnect the battery the fuel pump kicks in and runs continuously also the distributer sounts like it is doing something and the only way to stop this and the fuel pump is again to disconnect the battery?!

Any ideas? I suspect the relay but not sure and haven't got a spare.

Cheers,

Adam

What relay do you suspect? Why not pull it out and see if it stops everything.

I tried unpluging the ignition barrel connections and still the same. I will give the fuel pump realy a pull tonight and see if there is any change there. Fingers crossed if this is a short it isnt on the loom. Does the fuel pump relay affect the dizzy in any way?

Thanks Guys,

Adam.

King Gaycharger, butt plug dealer, Sheldon Cooper and a BAC but generally a niceish fella if you dont mind a northerner

Rotherham, South Yorkshire

We had this problem on the upside down skip. The alternator was back feeding the ignition circuit and energising the relay that ran the pump and megajolt.

Was that a new alternator job then? The car is a 1293 Turbo with standard 89 wiring loom + extras for the fuel pump but nothing out of the ordinary, running a metro turbo distributor.

i'm not 100% sure on this but to rule out the ignition switch, you can un-plug this from the loom.

If this makes no differance, I'd unplug the relay mounted up by the servo/ master cylinder; if i recall, this is the ignition relay. i've seen them fail but not to the point it keeps the ignition live.

beyond that, possible jammed solenoid?

Try running it with the alternator disconnected. You can put a diod in the wire from the alternator to stop it

Not good news :(

Disconnected the ignition relay - no change

Disconnected the alternator - no change

Disconnected the fuel pump to try and find what was up with the dizzy then reconnected it and that did th trick!! Now the car starts and runs but cuts out all of the time! and i need to set the ignition back to off and then back on again before it will drive again also hazards are intermittent, no reverse lights and no indicators! Looks like I might have a major short somewhere. I dont expect anyone to have answers or suggestions to this now apart from an auto electrician but worth a try.....

Any Ideas???????

Sounds like a dodgy ignition switch to me or a dodgy connection in the fuse box to the switched live cicuits (fuse with green wires).

Before you call out an auto electrician, have a quick check over the fuses and connections, and have a good look at the ignition switch.

Just another point, it may work out cheaper to buy a new or good condition second hand loom than get an auto electrician out...they're not cheap!

Ah just had a thought...you have removed the starter relay (4 pin type) and not the indicator/hazard relays (metal 2 pin type)?

The loom is only 2 years old, just wondering if a too high amp fuse has been in the mix somewhere what is the likelyhood of burning out relays and flasher units etc or would it more likely cause a short on the loom? The flasher units are the old tin type *wink*

Where does the fuel pump take its power supply from?

You need to check that there isn't power on the switched live circuit when the ignition is off. If there is, then its either a dodgy ignition switch or there is a short somewhere.

EDIT: what loom is it (year/model)

The loom was bought in from minisport, originally it was for a 89(G) 998 then the modifacations were made for the turbo.

SORTED!

I dug out the old circuit tester las night and had a once over only to find that all of these problems were being caused by a faulty fuse in the main box. The 35a fuse at the top of the box had a high resistance disconnection! Changed the fuse and all is back to nromal = happy man!

Thanks for all of your guys, who'd of thought it could be so simple?!
