And also, why do people seem to keep changing from inertia to pre-engaged? Better operation in theory, but in reality does it matter or make any difference?!

i think one of the reasons may be the price tag thats attached to the above starter motor

They are usually cheaper aren't they? Also the one I linked to above is cheaper than the pre-engaged one...

Mines a NAsp rally motor so will be fairly high comp, less current is always good though, smaller battery & cables etc.

Is that not a case of trying to use a pre-engaged starter on an inertia type ring-gear? Or the other way round..

But hi-torque aside I'm also still unsure as to why people change from inertia to pre-engaged, apart from they are slightly smaller and neater in standard form...

I think that they just work much better. They seem to engage with the ring gear much more reliably and do less damage to it.
