The front frame has gone under the front of the floor and up into the car. I doubt a frame would have helped with that.

Bloody hell, that looks like a fair impact. Looks like the occupants would have walked away though.

The weakness in a front end crash has always been the design of the subframe mounting points

In a crash, the front of the frame is forced downwards, and the top mounts act like a pivot point pushing the rear of the frame upwards, causing the floor to deform and enter the cabin, pulling the healboard with it
As the steering rack is attached to the heelboard, this then makes the steering column enter the cabin and the steering wheel hits the driver in the face

The worst way to have a crash though is at an angle through the wing, as the rear of the inner wing/door mounting points are not very substantial

A friend of mine hit a hedge in this way at about 40mph and the passenger side front wheel was lodged up against passenger seat
The front seat passenger ended up with a broken pelvis, and the rear seat passenger ended up with broken legs when the wheel pushed the seat back

Nasty

The cabin space still looks fairly well intact, better that the Ford Mondeo my mate crashed a few years back. That really did put the shits into me after sitting in the driver seat, and the reson I now position my seat in any car so that my knees are as far as practical, away from the dashboard.

Oh and the steering column has done exactly what Issigonis had intended!

hmm kinder makes you ether want to install a irreducibly huge and strong cage or make sure you hit fast enough not to feel it..
