Just wondering, what sort of boost will i be able to run on a 1040cc engine. its got a turbo cam in it, it was rebuilt about 4000 miles ago and it also has a 1.3 head. If it helps ill find the make of the cam and stuff. Just wondering what power i could expect to get from it.

Boost isn't dependant on CCs. Its all to do with CR, intake temp (i.e. do you run an intercooler) and fuel octane.

Also, what pistons are you using, as these will limit howmuch boost is sensible.

As a guide I run 18psi of boost on a 998 with 7.3: CR, a good intercooler and 101 octane fuel. this relieves about 140bhp.

what a silly thing to say!

Just wondering about looking into a bigger aftermarket head to lower the CR, but then lower down i cant imagine the low torque especially the lag. Dan is coming on to give more of the spec of the engine. Its going in a mk1 january 1960 and its going to be mint :)

you mite struggle to keep the CR down, when i plopped a 12G940 head on my old 998 it was pinking al over the place so had to run 97 ron fuel all the time.. pretty sure the smaller bore engiens head chambers are larger as standard.

My brotheres NA 998 runs a 12G940, we just calculated the chamber size for standard CR (10.3:1) and it has to be around 20cc.

Standard 12G940 is 24cc. I think the standard head would give 8.5:1 CR.

So if your car was pinking, then the timing was out or the head you were using had had a skim.

The 12g940 is a better head in my opinion, but involves pocketing the block, so slightly more hassle. Also we have had a problem with one of the waterways corroding under the cylinder sealing ring causing the head gasket to blow.

Will, my 998 is a 1040!! you have no chance at avon!

Is it balls a 1040. A 40 thou over bore on a 998 gives 1030. And I should know as I built the engine.

Sorry Feebs both our 998s are non turbo at the moment.

the pistons are dished i will find out what dish later on and the cam but it was descirbed as fast road, piper i think. thew head is easily changable obviusly but it has atm an MG metro head (sorry havent learnt casting numbers yet)
could we open up the chambers in the head as much as possible to loose a bit of CR?

MG metro head is a 12G940, same as a turbo head, and unleaded 1275 heads and leaded 1275 heads with the exception of early 1275 cooper stuff i believe.

same as in there all called a 12G940 even tho tehre all different!

forgive the silly question, but...

Feeble, why do you want to go the harder route of charging a 1040? The only reason i can think to do this is to keep it in a low class for racing, but isn't it just going to be a road car?

If i had all that cash to spend i'd build a killer 1293.

Or have i totally missed the point...

Yes, totally agree, why bother struggling to squeeze the power from a 1000 unless you are doing it for a reason e.g. class capacity as someone else said.
Use a 1300 as a start and you will get more power for less outlay...............

the reason is i have a 1040cc engine with 4000 miles on it i am willing to GIVE him to turbo for the hell of it. OR he could go out and spend a grand on a similar specced 1275....
its not cutting corners its just there so why not, i would only sell the engine otherwise and i like the challange lol
