Hey chaps

I'm half way through painting my new bonnet, and just wondered how best to tackle the clear-coat.

So far I have primed, painted 3 layers of paint, and inbetween the first two layers I flatted it back.

I was planning to flat the to player back till it's dulled and smooth, and then lacquer it.

Is that the right way to do it, or should I leave the paint as it is out of the gun (can!) and clear coat that?

Cheers,
al

When i do 2k i paint layers of base coat without hardener, then clear the lot when the base coat starts to tack off. The flatten and polish the clear once set. Get a good result, dont know if other paint systems require a different prosess. Cheers, dan

Just to say, I'm using rattle cans as I am too stupid to work out how to use my compressor.

Yeah, I put a lot of layers on, but it was all building up to proper 'layer' hence why I'm only claiming to have done 3 layers - I've put 3.5 400ml cans of colour on it in total.

I wouldnt flatten the base if there is clear to go on. Look on my build threads, they are home painted. Cheers, dan

Northamptonshire.

I do about 4 layers of primer with flatting in between each one then few layers of paint flatting back last 2 then laquer gives good results but ive only worked with black paint so far haha :)

I have always done "wet on wet" with lacquer and without flatting the last colour coat, obviously !

if you want an unbelievable shine more coats of laquer, the last time i resprayed mine i did 9 coats of laquer, not matter how much you polish with 2 coats it would never be as shiny. i was given this tip by an old boy who had that many concours/show and shine trophies he kept them in boxes

Done now needs redoing lol
