Im looking to buy a top box and roller cabinet, to be used on a daily basis.

Has anyone got any recommendations of where to buy a decent tool chest for a reasonable price around (£300-£350max). Ive seen several going for £600+ but I can't justify that kind of money when I need to also buy the tools to go in it, and I'd prefer to spend my money on quality tools than the box.

Basically as long as its holds the tools, and the drawers don't keep jamming up, it'll do! lol

Any pointers of where to look guys?

Cheers
Matt

From experience Clarke ones are shit. Sealey ones look suspiciously exactly alike, either they are just the same chinese jobs rebadged or clarke copied them. The sealey ones are the same sort of price though so I think they are all just badged.

I've got a combination of Clark hd roller cab and a second hand snap on top chest. The top chest was a good find at £80, the roller cab I think is around £200.

I know a good few also rate the halfords pro stuff as well

Is there much difference in the Halfords professional and Halfords industrial?

Ive got myself a Halfords card which sways me towards there boxes but I wasn't sure if they'd last if being used daily? By the sounds of things they are fairly robust though.

Would you say the top box drawers could cope much weight?

Personal opinion, buy a second hand Snap on box, reasons being, it will hold it's value if you ever come not to need it, and you will build your tools up gradually over the years, but you'll only ever buy one box.

I agree, I have a snap on box that I got on finance and a halfords one, no comparison.

As an apprentice i managed to get hold of a MAC box second hand for a steal. This gave me spare cash to spend on tools. I still have this box after eight years and was recently offered more money than I spent as a trade in :) I have mates with the Clarke blue box and halfords pro and have to say they are good quality for the price.

got halfords top and bottom black one whatever that is... roller draws used every day holds everything although its getting full now and been used daily for coming up 10 years now not had an issue from it, if you have a reliable snap on man they do some decent deals occasionally but never been tempted. its a fucking tool box at the end of the day, take the badges off if your worried about it :)

I have a clark bottom box. I broken one of the runners when I accidentally sat on one of the drawers. :$ I guess they aren't designed to take 15st... Other than that it's fine. Top box is a Halfords standard jobbie. Ben lugged all over with me, done thousands of miles in the car and is still spot on.

I outgrew my cheapo first buy halfords tool chest and top box and bought the halfords industrial one liked to above. It had loads of space when I transfered all my tools over, but now, i've outgrown that one lol.

at the very least go and have a look at it Matty, its tall and fat and has big fat casters, which allows me to store two 2 tonne trolly jacks underneath.

at £350 offer price, its better than anything you'd get elsewhere for that price!

I'm looking at another one to pair it up lol

I think I'll take another trip to Halfords then. :)

Machine mart, had some reasonably priced stuff, but reading the reviews above it seems some of the stuff might be a gamble.

To be honest im not worried about having a 'brand name' just something that is good value for money. I know people that have spent £3k on tools boxes...that just seems an obscene amount to me! *surprised*

Snap on for me - my middle box is donkey's old and tatty as fuck and works perfect.

You can always put a coat of paint on.

The clarke roller underneath is a pile of shite and due to be evicted once I find a snap on at the right price.

The tools might be a bit OTT for the average home mechanic but a good box makes it worth putting your tools away.

I got a repo MAC top and roller cab, the top box wasnone of the fancy graphic ones (took it all off) and the bottom was one of there expencive black and chrome rollers. Was used everyday for 2-3yrs never skipped a beat, then used at home for the last 3 yrs still smooth as anything, cost me 125 for the top (full of tools) and 420 for the bottom also with tools, all bits inside were mac or snap-on.
