I am at a point where i need to build some space in my garage loft, either side of my garage running down the length of the garage is two big joists these are around 300mm x 100mm and are 3mtrs apart, i intend to put some structual timbers across between these joists and board out a section, is these a formula to work out what size i can use? i was thinking 100x47 would be strong enough but have the option of 125x47 and 150x47 however they abviously get heavier and would be harder to install

you will be able to find Trada span tables on the web that will give you the size and spec for the new timber. However, this would all depend on the loading the existing joists are able to carry, bearing in mind waht they may already be carrying |

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be... So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'... On 26th Oct, 2004 Tom Fenton said:

Andy , a little lesson in timber sizes, 97x47 is 4x2, 145x47 is 6x2, and so on, these sizes are uaually prefixed by the term ex, meaning "from"

I would be looking more closely at what Rob said in that you are going to add load to two beams that (presumably) are already carrying roof loads for which they were calculated.

It is only for light bulky stuff that takes up room Crystal Sound Audio said:
