can the keys really shear off the offset crank washer? or are we talking on really high output engines?

Never had a problem personally? The flywheel locates onto the taper of the crank nose rather than the keyed washer anyhow so as long as its tight on the taper you should have no problem?
I always lap the flywheel onto the end of the crank to prevent it fretting, hence easir to get off again next time.

hm, was just reading KAD's catalog and came across...

'KAD keyed flywheel washer and flywheel bolt
High output engines can shear the keys off of the standard keyed flywheel washers,
they are too soft and whilst fine for 60 horsepower, powerful 16 valve, 1460 and
turbo engines need strength here. KAD make the washers and the flywheel bolts
in heat treated EN24 steel, these do not fail under competition conditions.'

1450cc and i thrash the tit's of it, never had the flywheel even fret let alone shear off. :)

Maybe someone should suggest to KAD not to apply grease to the taper and only tighten the bolt up to 25lb ft?

As Tom says - the taper, not the key holds the flywheel.

But, with a better offset key, the toque applied to the flywheel will be momre "correct". All we do now is to deform the key.. Or at least some.

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.
