When sourcing/buying a Garrett T2 Turbo - (newb question) does it matter if the turbo is from a petrol or diesel donor car to put on a 1275cc A+engine.

Always better to ask and gain some knowledge than be stuck with a useless part.

I'm going to be buying a 1275cc Engine&Gearbox
metro front brake setup
Garret T2 Turbo
and all other parts i need after that

i have read through various topics on here etc for what i would require to convert mini to turbo and have a list of whats required.

any advice welcomed.

The 'T' designation for a Garrett turbo refers to construction type rather than its size. However, typically the larger the number the larger the turbo (in physical size and flow).

In each 'class' of turbo there are various sizes, the T2 typically used by mini guys has a compressor A/R or .48 and a turbine A/R or .35 and this is the one you want.

Whether it is off a petrol or a diesel is irrelavent.

If you can get a GT1548, then this is to all intent the same unit.

so a Garrett T2 Turbo petrol or diesel donor will do with the compressor A/R or .48 and a turbine A/R or .35 and this is the one you want. - or the GT1544.

Thanks for the advice/reply.

more of a guide; you can generally use any turbo you want if it will work. the A/R's are a good place to start.

edit: i dont think you can use the the turbos that are like GT1548v. Can remember what the v stands for but its something to do with electronic wizardry. Also this is only really on new new turbos.

The 'v' stands for VNT. Variable Nozzel Turbine (turbo). These are prevalent on diesel cars and not suitable for use really.

The GT1548 is very similar to the T2 used on the Renault 5 GT Turbo which has been proved to be OK on a 1275.

The GT1544 is too small for a 1275 IMHO.

T2 is entry level, low boost optimal.

If you want higher boost and power there are better suited turbos.

Depends what you want. The T2 will make 160bhp, but that's it limit. For a useable road car, 160 is more than enough and the beauty of the T2 is almost supercharger like levels of boost at low rpm.

That will do me if its pulling well at low boost thats the ticket and up to 160bhp be fun enough in a mini.

no point going mental for a big turbo with huge turbo lag cheers

A GT1752 will give you as much power as you want (200 bhp+) with very little lag.

You will always want more boost *wink*

so a GT1752 or GT1548 or a T2 Turbo will be suitable for a 1275 cc engine.

any idea on a suitable price for these items.

really does depend what you consider suitable and price varies on demand! for example if you get lucky you can get a gt17 for 60+ pounds but on ebay they are listed as sometimes 200+. just have a search and what seems reasonable to you is good enough.
