This is a little story about my bit of DIY I carried out on Saturday. Now when I went to school I was pony at wood work so I don’t know why I started this task, but it has been in my head for the last 2 years and the fact that I have been using my drill press a lot at the min forced my hand.

Ok as you can see when I used the drill I had to kneel on the floor, NOT very good when lots of speed holes need doing. So I looked for something that I could buy, but I could not find anything that fitted the bill. As I don’t have much room in the “Man Cave”, space saving was at the front of my mind, and then
cost. So I stated with my little blue book that I make notes in about the car, and all things like that, and I started drawing up what I was looking for, what sizes I would like and what would fit in the space allocated in the corner of the cave. I only wanted to pay for 1 sheet of ply and I worked it out so I could get the sawmill to cut the sheets into strips for me as I only have my low slung sports car to move this stuff about.

So the plan was set with the best of Military precision. A list of bits was made and final plans were drawn then before I knew it, it was 2am Friday so off I went to bed.

At 08.30 on Saturday morning I set off on my quest to the world of the DIY’er, First to B&Q and well let’s just say I could of got a Snap on stand for the price they was charging! Then I headed to Travis Perkins where they said they could not cut the sheet up, but he did send me to a wood specialist. Tiptop all the bits I needed in one place, then off to Tool station for cheap screws, coasters, and handles. By 10:30 I was heading back to the house with a load of wood in the back and £40 lighter.

At this point I still had loads of enthusiasm for the task and I don’t have any wood working type of tools i.e. battery drills, so after screwing 4 screws in by hand I plugged my drill in and turned the speed down, then it started raining so up went the tarp.

Fast forward 9hrs and I now have a very over engineered stand with 2 big draws for my air tools and stuff with a top draw for drill bits, I am happy with how it turned out but this is not something I think I will ever do again if I can help it.

Then it was out with the boys for a night on the beer. *happy*

Not that I am any good at it, but I like working with wood, just because it is so easy to cut and drill compared to steel! Imagine trying to cut through a piece of steel 4x2" with a handsaw, you'd be there all day and have arms like Popeye, but timber is a piece of piss, I can cut it on the piss too!

I like the cleanness of wood, im a chippy as my main trade. But with wood you cant add back to it like you can with, metal so in some ways metal work is easier.
