hi guys

as you may no my 1987 998cc gearbox is almost dead but i have a 1275cc gearbox out of a 1987 austin metro ans was wondering if it would work if i put the 1275cc gearbox on the 998cc engine????

Yes! The final drive may? Be higher on the 1275 count the teeth on the differential the big gear and the small gear the pinion gear see it they are the same ? Doesent matter though if you aren't bothered

first gear might be different on the 998, but it won't make much difference.

The 1.3 hle metro had a wide ratio box with a 2.95 final drive identifiable by the double grooves in the tops of the gears.

However it is far more common to find metro boxes with the standard single grove gearset and a 3.44 final drive.

to find out whats in your car (assuming it hasn't been changed out before) stick your engine number in here and it will tell you what the final drive should be
