Hi all I am in the process of building a turbo conversion?

Now this is the list of things I have purchased so far, what else will I need?

1. Turbo head, with bigger 24cc chambers cut out.
2. Mirage Manifold
3. Hiff44 turbo carb
4. Turbo plenum
5. Intercooler
6. Actuator

This is a list of things I have already. I am looking to turbo my original 1330cc engine, but to run low boost to start with, then I will change my pistons and conrods for forged one to up the boost.

Will I need anything else to complete this set up for a low boost conversion?

In regards to my gearbox, will I be able to run the standard box for now and upgrade later and can run this set up with the standard electronic dizzy to start with or will this need to be upgraded as well?

Cheers

Bobby

Sorry forgot to mention the main thing, the turbo, this is:

1. T2/GT15 hybrid with a 360* thrust bearing in there.

Cheers

Bobby

You'll need to modify the fueling with a fuel pressure regulator and all necesary fittings etc

A 4 pin diff is a minimum gearbox wise really

All the info you need parts wise can be found on www.turbo-mini.com

What cc pistons does the 1330 have in it?

I am not too, sure as i bought the engine complete and did not build it.

I have got the head off at the moment, is there a way of working it out.

But when i did do a compression test on the head it did read 120psi to 130psi

You might be able to get a very rough measure of the piston dish by using oil and a syringe...though i believe most aftermarket a series pistons have around 6-7 cc in the crown. It would also be useful to obtain the deck height at tdc to see if any cc can be found there

120-130psi quite a veriety and all quite low on pressure, they idealy should be all very similar psi on test 10psi seems quite a differance to me. I would have the head off and check everything, for the sake of a few gaskets could save you alot of money.

How do I measure the cc in the piston with a syringe?

Do I just put oil in the dish and take it out with a syringe and what ever it measure thats what the cc should be?

Sorry, typing one fingered due to being pinned down by a cat!

Set piston at tdc.

get a piece of perspex larger than the cylinder and drill 2 small holes in it. ring land volume and piston to deck height all count, so it needs to sit on the deck, not just the top of the piston.

fill with liquid from a syringe, take note of quantity, making sure none escapes,

Not that large, but didn't have the heart to move her to try to type with 2 hands!

I was looking at Force Racing website earlier, and noticed they do machine work to pistons.

Is it a good thing to get my pistons machined so I get a bigger CC out of the dish to reduce the compression ratio.

If so what CC is it good to get the pistons machined too, with my pistons?

All help is appreciated.

Cheers

Bobby

well that depends on what your compression ratio is at the moment, have you measured it?

when I measured it, it was reading 126 psi on two cylinder and 131 psi on the other two cylinders

thats your compression generated by the upsweep of the piston.

Compression ratio is the ratio of the volume of the combustion chamber with the pistons at BDC to the volume of the combustion chamber at top dead centre. There are plenty of guides around on how to calculate it.

Bobby, your going to have to measure your pistons/deck volume as i mentioned. There are no shortcuts sadly and people will struggle to help you without it

here's a link to that file i mentioned the other day. http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=498635

you could always try and clean the top of the pistons to see if it has any numbers however your still going to need to measure your deck volume.

Thats great, I tried to have a go at it and its saying I need to remove -11.55cc from my pistons to achieve a 7.5:1 compression.

Is this right?

That's a low compression ratio, how much boost are you planning on running? With a CR that low you'll be losing a lot of performance off boost. but if you're set it might be worth looking at getting the head machined out as well? especially if you cant take loads out of the piston

aim for 8.5:1, or 9:1 if your going to run less than 10 psi boost

Oh cool, well I put 8.5:1 its reading I need to take out -4.74 cc out of the piston.

Joe C, you said if I am going to run less than 10psi, but if I wanted to run more PSI, would I go a lower compression?

the std metro turbo was 9.3:1 and ran 7 psi boost, Ive seen 9:1 used at 10psi, and bit higher with a good intercooler,

quite a fre people on her run in the region of 8.5:1 and up to 20 psi (or more!)

its all a bit of a guess really as it depends a lot on fuel, how effective the intercooler is how rich, what the specs of the engine are etc etc.

what I put above is a good guide though,
