what are the typical symptoms for worn piston rings?
same for blown turbo seals exhaust side only? inlet side is dry

the car blows blue smoke when hot ( not noticeably when cold), rather faint on over run and cruse but quit a bit on power/boost, it gets worse as the revs increase
and only seems to do it when it wants too *happy*

anyone have any input for me? *happy*

Off the wall suggestion but I ran a Kent engine which did that and it turned out that if I retarded the ignition a touch it all went away ! I rationalised it to myself that the increased advance was "rattling" the pistons and making the ring seal less than perfect ?. Those old Ford pistons were very heavy and prone to wear quite quickly when thrashed, too.
Worth a try ?

I would personally say NOT guides. My turbo 205 needs guides at the moment, it smokes badly on overrun or when restarted when hot, but on full chat its clean as a whistle.

Mine has the same issue.

I sent the head to slark and he said my guides were fine.

It was much worse before, but I had a u bend in the oil drain. I fixed that and its no where near as bad.

Check your oil drain isnt kinked I guess? Im leaning towards exhaust oil seal on my turbo or left over residue

hope this helps =]

Agreed mine is the opposite no smoke on overrun

From the start i have said turbo oil seals but it had another turbo when i bought it so previous owner was adament (sp?) its not that
Chances of buying a dud turbo after a turbo failure are slim but possible, it is a ball bearing turbo so next thing im looking into is how it gets its oil ( BB turbos oil feed have to be restricted or they smoke)

The symptoms are very similar for rings, turbo oil seal and guides. It usually ends up being more a process of elimination.
That said some hints from my experience that MAY help. Rings tend to smoke all the time, turbo oil seal is often fine under boost then dumps a ton of oil in exhaust on overun, guides more initial smoke from cold start. Problem is the symptoms can overlap and they all depend how bad each fault is..

My rings are shot and I got lots of smoke on overrun, but not too bad on boost where the rings get forced out against the bore.

Some on cruise though too.

compression test all within 8psi of each other and gain 12-15 across all 6 cylinders with oil
the compression is 20psi down on the factory value does this seem reasonable for an 80k engine?

with the vacuum sump disconnected there is no breathing out the breather at all not even a whifff

har har, actually i bought this mainly out of money i have not spent on the mini in the last 8 months with enough left in the kitty for a fully forged engine ( why i bought a smoker with 10k worth of mods) *happy*

another symptom tested out this aft..
when cold and the oil pressure is high 85-120psi it smokes with abit of stick
when it warms up and settles at the normal 65psi no smoke at all untill it gets hot then it smokes a fair bit on the power

this sounds mucho like the turbo to me

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

Replace the Turbo, or get it refurbed, on 80k it will be tired on a unknown engine.

If the problem is still there go for a rebore etc....

But my monies on a goosed ring land above the oil control ring on one piston.

Hope this. Helps

Sounds like turbo seals, oil pressure won't affect oil up the bores much, and a hotter engine means tighter piston clearance.

'Where does the engine go?'

rather specific, i like it :)

lets assume it is just above the oil control ring and below the 2nd compression ring but no where else, i would expect the compression test to show it even if its only slightly down or would the top compression ring be enough to hide the damage?
