I know a few of you are either in the building trade or architects ect

I have a large single story extension on the side of my house that was done in the 60's, i would like to start planning a second story however i dont know if the foundations are deep enough.

could someone point me in the right direction of how to find out if they are the correct depth and if not canit be corrected without knocking half the extension down

foundation depth will, to a great deal, be determined by the bearing capacity of the soil so there is no hard and fast rule. any warrant application is going to need either calculations or an engineers certificate

Would i go to a structural engineer to see if this was possible Rob?

yes, although it would do no harm to find out what depth and size your current founds are first. would also be good to know what the current wall consitruction is as well as this will also have to support the first floor walls, floor structure and roof

i know its different as per the soil, but even thats changed over the years, it used to be something silly in clay like 8ft, then it changed to 3ft, but then who's to say the building regs/structual engineer wouldn't change that....

I read that the foundation should be the same as the house foundation. My house is 600mm deep, my constention is 1000mm deep

I seriously doubt it!

id dig a hole next to your foundation ,say 2ft by 2 ft showing the depth of the foundation as youl need to prove this to an engineer ,but a phonecall to them first never hurts , good luck mate

give em hell
