ok chaps, i already have a injection tank in the car, but im using it with an external pump at the moment. I've blocked off the return temporarily to do this, but obsviously the breather is still open. Im now looking to use the injection tank pump as im changing engines and the external one isnt an option. what kit and setup would i need to do this? I'd obviously need a regulator which would handle a return, but which one would i use? My experiance of regulators, pumps etc is very limited. Any info would be usefull.

Really not sure what you're asking - or what/why you've been doing what you have - other than thinking you're nat-asp and have been using one of these little fuel pumps for carbs?

Anyway - you need to look in the FAQ / how to sections, and have a look how to plumb in the tank and regulators. ALL the answers are in there.

yep, im nat.asp at the moment and have converted my single point car to run on a carb. In the process of switching to carb, i fitted a mechanical pump and a few other bits as i couldnt sucsessfully get the carb'd engine running with the injection pump in the tank.

I know its possible to use the injection tank and pump with a carb, i just never managed to get it working before. As im planning on dropping in a turbo motor in the future (when i get the time and money to build it) i want to get this part up and running now rather than jumping in at the deep end with both new motor and new fuel system.

I'll take a look at the faq a bit more closely if the informations there.

You need to use a turbo type fuel reg. Available second hand or still available brand new from Avonbar and others. This regulates pressure down from pump pressure to the 4 psi required for a carb. The regulator also has a hose stub that you pipe to the plenum. This allows the regulator to keep the fuel pressure above boost pressure. If using on a N/A car then leave this hose stub open to atmosphere, and you will be able to run your N/A engine with the fuel setup 75% ready for turbo use.

ok having read all relevant articles in the faq im still a little confused.

on initial setup i simply wired the fuel pump into the ignition live so the pump would activate through ignition. I then connected the fuel outlet to a regulator like shown here:

http://andeh.cgoodman.me.uk/andy/myrtlework/regulator.jpg

i blocked the fuel return hose and left the breather open.

On switching the ignition the pump switched on etc and the engine started up fine. About 3 seconds after switching the ignition the pump started making a little more noise than usual and a further 10 or so seconds later the engine cut out. It was just about possible to get the engine started, but not for any amount of time.

After a lot of faffing and mincing around i ditched the regulator and disconnected the electrics to the pump in the tank. I then connected up a mechanical pump. However, i want to get the pump working properly now and am unsure what i did wrong initially.

Any input would be appriciated.

At a guess that regulator isn't suitable for what you are trying to get it to do, probably it is not strong enough to hold back the powerful injection pump.

The turbo reg is slightly different, as it has a return on it, to get rid of the excess fuel back to the tank, so that the regulator diagphram isn't forced open.
The only other thing, when you fitted that regulator did you tee in a fuel pressure gauge and set the regulator up properly (to give 4psi fuel pressure?)

i didnt set it up, but i will now, i'll order a lo guage as per daves guide and see what i can do with it.

i think your right though, it might need a return to tank from the regulator?

one like this pehaps?

No, Buy the minispares (or secondhand) regulator unit. that one you have is NOT suitable.

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

you need a return!!!!

no wonder the pump sounded funny *smiley*

yeah just use the feed and return and fit a turbo reg and you'll be fine.

as tom says just leave the plenum one open for N/A then connect up to the plenum when turbo'd. pics in the FAQ's

£40 inc VAT for a brand new regulator sounds like a good deal to me. Old ones can have stretched diaphrams, which lead to other problems... Buy it, fit it, forget it!
