I am after some advise about spraying some wheels. They are some cosmic mk2 alloys. At the moment they are in a shot blasted state, as they were completely filthy. But now I want to paint them. The reliefs are going to be black and the front face in aluminium.

I was thinking several options,

Paint the black as you normally would, primer, gloss etc... Then polish the aluminium and lacquer.

But lacquer won't stick to bare polished aluminium as it needs to 'key'. So I thought of an etch lacquer, but the black paint won't like it.

Or I leave the aluminium bare and polish it every two minutes and worry about it tarnishing for the rest of my life.

So I'm thinking my final option is to get a clear powder coat, but I'm afraid this will go yellow, and still not stick to the aluminium.

I have seen, on a set of Douglas wheels that we used on the race car that they had a coating on to keep them bright, but haven't a clue what this was.

Any advise would be fantastic! As I'm still at a bit of a loss.

Thanks

Matt

For my old cosmics, i had them blasted, painted the whole wheels in the booth, then did the black by hand. A bit laborious, but they looked pretty good.

Woolavington, Zummerzet

I sent mine to Pristine wheels and they did a splendid job.

Not cheap mind you... but it ought to last well.

Metric is for people who can't do fractions.

Right,

Did some tests earlier. And the long and short of it is, I'm painting the bare aluminium too. Bought some Audi aluminium silver from halfords.

So etch prime the lot, then high build the front face gloss black all over, key up the bits to be silver, mask (going to be a bastard), and paint silver, then tonnes of clear coat just for protection.

I'll post a pic if any one really wants to see, and if it turns out okay.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

I would get them shot blasted and powder coated you can get a silver with a super glitter effect done, they look fabola .... then you can sit back and sup beer admiring. Them for the next 25 years knowing they will look good for at least that time

Job put to bed.
