hi there. i know that there has been a bit of discussion on this reccently. basically i have an a series 1275 without the centre main hole. the block is on a worn 1293 bore. it would be ok to go out to +73 or +73.5.

i have been offered a standard 1275 a plus block as a direct swap, on a 1275 bore. it doesnt really matter too much to me what i use in my car. i was wondering what the value of the a block would be as i know that they are used by classic racers etc.

basically would a straight swap be fair?

cheers, dan

Too bad it's a worn 1293 as this effect the value considerably. If it had been standard I guess you could get £250 for the block easy. Now it needs liners to be "valuable"

However, I've been checking getting som 0.25" pistons made...1299 anyone? *wink*

Swiftune pay silly money for blocks without the centre main hole you could possibly sell them the one you have and buy two replacement A+.

Metric is for people who can't do fractions.

I believe some/most 'A' series blocks have a hole above the centre main which is deemed to be a weakness.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

if the replacement block doesn't have the hole, get it and sell it to swifty. otherwise try swifty with your other block and get an A+ block or 3 with the money

For those who are too young to have seen an early 1275 block :) :) here is the "hole"

It's just a deliberate void in the casting to avoid a very thin section being required in that location.

I've got two blocks like this, one STD and one 015 (015 and 030 used to be standard rebore sizes back then) and they are just in my way. I've asked a few times if they are worth anything (historical racing etc) but there has never been a concensus.

From an engineering point of view just crack test it first in the corners of the void then radius/blend the corners...

Most engine shops who do Historic stuff want 1275 A-Series blocks regardless of the hole, it's just that Swifty can afford to be choosy and the price of them has rocketed.

Steve,

That was the original question....

an a series 1275 without the centre main hole vs an a plus

My picture was just an early A series with the hole for those who have never seen one :)
