A red one. It will give you more BHP!

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

on a serious note, the standard frame will do.

Having said all that, in the earlier days, it was common practice to triangulate the frame and solid mount the rear section to the bulkhead to make up for the formation of the bulkhead box. If I recall correctly, Avonbar used to supply the kit of metal plate needed to do the job.

i've seen very few cars with this mod though

Your thinking of the engine, I thought the subframe had to be blue

Also on a serious note, if you search on here, I think it is the auto and later MPI subframe moved the engine backwards 12mm or so, which may help/hinder dependent on your application?

Do the search though if this is relevant as my numbers are most likely off!

Didn't the later frames MPI etc moved the engine forwards?

Auto frames are wider and need adaptors to put a manual engine in.

Late frames (HIF carbed cars onwards) move the engine forward 10-12mm. Auto frames drop the engine down lower if you have bracketry to convert the engine mounts.

SPI and as Will says MPI frames have moved the engine forward 10-15mm. Good news at the back but even less room down the front!

They moved the engines forward to get the HIF38/44 carbs in as they are deeper than the HS carbs. I had to 'adjust' the bulkhead in my old clubman to get a HIF38 in there.

Ah, apologies I stand corrected, I knew it was one way but forwards doesn't really help matters (unless you already have an MPI/SPI one and need more front room!)

Personally I prefer the earlier (twin bolt towers) type.

(a) it's solidly mounted by design, and,

(b) the rear legs attach to a much stronger part of the floor.

I've also strengthened the tie bar mounts as mentioned above because I too have had one fail on a standard car.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

with all this said, basically, you can use the frame that is already in the car..........
