Ive had an old metro turbo moor under my bench for a few years now, and have just taken it apart as i need a crank for another engine, and i want a block for building up for the K100 16v head I also have.

my question is around the journals/shell bearings.

on all a-series ive stripped before, the crank is shiny silver on journals and the nose and tail.

this:-

this crank is different, - what I was expecting to be shiny-silver is more of a dull nickel colour!

this:-

likewise the shells are not what I expected either - they dont exhibit any scoring and are a strange colour - the material isnt like any standard shell Ive removed before - here beside a set i took out of another motor i have apart:-

I have, like most people heard that some fabled turbo motors came with a treated crank - is that actually true? - how can i tell if this has had something done to it?

thanks for any info.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Fastest A Series Mini in the World

leeds/wakefield.

if the second pic is of the so called turbo crank then it looks like it has been hardened ,

the black shells just look like a good old fashioned million mile'r no oil changer metro engine, black with carbon contamination

yup, my K100 is a 16V - Late K100RS head.

and yup, that crank is fubar - dont think it will grind out - some people shouldnt be allowed to drive cars.

thanks for that Carl - the turbo motor they came out appears to be low-mileage and generally in OK condition - damaged ring-lands excepted.

- can I use standard replacement shells with this crank or does it need something else?

The blackening I thought was caused by moisture. The moisture creates acids in the oil and other contaminants also present in the oil which aid oxidation and etching of the lead alloy. We see it in our Centrifugal compressors

Why? You can grind 1mm. That removes a lot of scores...

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.
