Folks,

Ive been looking to some how help the generally babber heater in the mini, I was thinking of using an Inline 12v Blower mounted to the inner wing to push air down into the heater.

also I was going to replace the plastic ducting to the window blowers with some silicon/smooth bore stuff.

Has anyone else tried anything else? Im not so much bothered about the car being warm, just being able to see out the window?

Thanks

Mike

First thing I would do is flush the matrix out with a hose, the heater can become a bit of a dead leg with not much flow through, so any silt and crap can build up there, this obviously effects how much heat you get out.
As for the blower, as you say try to seal up the ducts a bit better to make sure the air gets where it is supposed to be.
Another thing that can help is one of those moisture trap things in the car, if the inside is not as wet then you don't get the condensation on the inside in the first place.

Mike, I've got a late plastic body SPI heater which owes me £30.

These are shit loads better than the old metal ones. I'm not likely to use it.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I changed my heater matrix for an alloy one as found in newer mini (90ies ones) That was FAAR better then the old one.

Motor does seem more powerful and I've given it a good flushing already, but wouldn't hurt to give it another whack.

I always found the standard heater ok as long as the pipes were all sealed and assuming the matrix isn't choked.

perhaps us northerners are a bit more hardy! (sits back and awaits the abuse)

If keeping things mini looking is required and you can find one, MPI twin speeds are the way to go. Mate had one and says it was much better (almost worked!).

The later plastic body heaters are much better, but you will have to think about its plumbing since the hoses connect to the matrix on the left hand side of it and the windscreen ducting is a larger ID, you you'll also need the nozzles to suit

The MPi heaters like most things mini are excessively over priced.

If you want two speeds, buy the single speed plastic body heater, change the switch and fit a resistor. Probibly half the cost of a two speen MPi unit!!

I too have been having trouble with my heater, the windows on teh inside of the car get really wet, worked perfect before I removed the ducting from the front of the car to the heater. Is there anyway of increasing the flow to the heater without putting this back in ( I had to block up the hole to the engine bay as I needed the space )

I was going to mount a fan like Mike said.

If you remove the fresh air vents, you will ALWAYS have a condensation problem even with the heater full on.

The trick is crack the window open just a little.

The fresh air feed to the heater takes cold humid air and heats it up, and in doing so the relative humidity drops, thus demists your windows.
