Hi folks -

Just found your site from the yahoogroups minilist - fantastic stuff! I've been pondering going for a Metro Turbo conversion for a while now and have decided to bite the bullet in the new year.

Can anyone tell me how big a job it is? I know about the bulkhead box already.

I want to raise the boost when I'm done so I'll first install the engine as standard and get it running, then later on look at fitting straight cut gears, upratd diff etc. Once I've got the engine what modifications other than the bulkhead box are needed, and any idea of difficulty/cost?

I'm planning on uprating the brakes (either Metro 4 pots or Aluminium callipers from MiniSport) and the suspension (but not too knowledgable on these - any pointers on kit/setup?). Does the bulkhead box really weaken the shell as much as people say? If so is there any way to reinforce it again? Will be fitting front and rear road cages anyway...

Hello and welcome...

have a look at the conversion I have just finished... www.afracing.com/minit.htm

Its a bigger job than you think, but its mainly the number of jobs to do rather than the complexity of them.

I fyou are planning to raise the boost then its better to prep an engine ready for that... the CR on the std engine is just too high to do anything useful.

Regarding bulkhead boxes; The people who say it weakens the shell are not (in my opinion) people who are qualified to make statements like that....
A properly welded in bulkhead box, that was seam welded itself beforehand, is pretty rigid. You will also be solid mounting your subframe (ideally) to the shell, so it is all the more 'rigid' than a non solid frame anyway...

As regards the bulkhead box, people still get this wrong, so check out the FAQ on this site, and do yourself a big favour and fabricate and weld in, an ultimate engien steady mount.

Have fun!

one tip ill give u is try to get hold of a full running car which will have everything on u need and give you a good starting point.
i made the mistake of buying everything seperatly and although i got a cracking engine i ended up traveling about 650 miles and it cost me probably 4 times as much *frown*

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.
