Just call customs. Anything over £26 will have import tax calculated against declared or applied value I believe.

Also remember that all tax applied is for the total cost INCLUDING postage

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

your only other option for zero tax is to get them to send it as a gift then its tax free.

Don't forget that some delivery firms also add around another tenner on as a fee for paying the duty for you.

Having just run the gauntlet of importing a car from teh States, import duty is 10% of the declared value and the VAT is charge at 20% on the declared value, the import duty and the shipping cost !

Robbing gits...

Metric is for people who can't do fractions.

10% on the value plus shipping vat on the whole lot, get them to declare it as a gift of a sample of no commercial value if you can... *wink*

Completely and utterly wrong. If it has value, it is liable for tax. Simplez.

And IMO DO NOT use USPS/Parcel Force. It may seem cheaper, but postage is slow, and when it gets here, any cheapness goes out the window when Parcel Force stick their arm in and extort another £13.50 handling fee from you, and you wont get your goods until you pay them !!

FedEx every time.

That doesn't always work - tried it with an expensive piece of jewellery and HMRC actually impounded it and phoned me to collect before allowing it to be delivered.

Import duty varies depending on the gods. Most motoring related stuff is 3.5-4.5% and then of course our wonderful 20% VAT, plus any handing charges.

So really the Import duty for automotive stuff is no big deal, but cunt is the VAT.

Some goods carry zero import duty, but they are few.

And as you said. There are many ways to try and get around paying the duty, Very often they will work, but you need to be prepared to explain yourself if things do go tits up, and they will hold your goods until it is resolved.

Import duty is only charged if the declared value is over £135 including shipping, and it is waved if the amount of duty is less than £9. Import duty rates vary depending on the item.

Any goods over £18 are liable. Unless it has changed very very recently. ( ie it hasnt )

Apparently any "gifts" from one individual to another less than £36 are ok. Over £36 they are liable.
Although a gift posted from a business will of course look a bit susipicious

Some good info about half way down this page

VAT is liable above £15 (or £40 if a gift), import duty above £135 as I stated above but waived if below £9 is due. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/customs/post/buying.htm Unless HMRC are wrong (i.e. they aren't)

But if you read your own link, you still pay VAT - that is the killer, not import duty.

"All other goods
If you order or send purchased goods other than alcohol, tobacco, perfume and toilet water from a country outside the EU then you:
don't have to pay Excise Duty
may have to pay Customs Duty on goods with a value that exceeds £135
will have to pay import VAT on goods with a value that exceeds £15"

Try the last line......

" will have to pay import VAT on goods with a value that exceeds £15"

VAT and handling charges are the killer, not import duty.

Even the £15 loophole (used to be £18) is being closed down for imports from the Channel Islands (typically DVDs / CDs /BluRay).

From the US you are screwed for VAT, end of story.

I know VAT is due above £15, as I stated that? I was just trying to point out that there is also import duty to consider which might be important if you are comparing cost in UK against importing. As the cost of a single Megajolt is likely to be below the £135 threshold, and if it's close it is likely to be below the £9 limit so it probably won't figure at all. There was also mention of 10% import duty which may be the incorrect percentage as it isn't a flat rate, so I was trying offer some clarity on the minefield of what importing ends up costing.

Yes, but the import duty (if it's required and as you say the threshold is quite high), is insignificant compared to the VAT.

It's the VAT that kills us plus the handling charges (outrageous) by ParcelForce an the others.

I just think the OP needs to know that there is a strong probability that he/she will get stung for 20% VAT, plus handling charges even if there is no duty to pay.

Summary, main killer, VAT, 20%, end of story, second, handling charges (by the likes of ParcleForce to process the VAT, usually £8-£16), third, duty, usually low.

I should probably add that in terms of how Customs actually apply their own rules for non-EU countries, for everything I've imported above the limit - with customs forms properly completed, not just marked "gift" - my results are approximately,

Canada - never charged out of eight times.

Australia - charged once out of four times.

USA - charged every time.

Maybe the USA just hate me :)
