A group of us was discussing which car can be classed as 'the Ultimate Classic'.
Contenders seem to be:

The Model 'T' Ford, which brought motoring to the masses and, maybe, to a lesser extent the original Austin 7 in the U.K.
The Willys Jeep, because it was the fore-runner of all the 4 x 4's we see nowadays and was the inspiration behind the Land Rover.
The Porsche 911 because it has been in series production for 50 years without the basic configuration changing.
The Ford Mustang because of what it represents to a generation and the subsequent development of the genre.
The VW Beetle, although its Nazi origins put some people off. Still a design classic though.
The 'E-Type' Jaguar because it was a revolution in performance, styling and low price.

But, of course, the Mini is ahead of them all because: it introduced a new drive-line technology which is now used in almost every car, it was low-cost and offered an introduction to motoring to a generation, its performance was simply amazing at the time of introduction and through its performance variants, it was in volume production for 40 years, it was and is fun to drive and it is recognised all over the World.

So are we a part of the preservation of the most iconic classic car ever and keepers of a significant aspect of motoring history? The answer has to be a big YES!
