Lookin into getin a lathe, it will probably b 3 phase unless the right one comes up. What is the better option for a 3hp lathe. A phase converter or change the motor for a single phase 3 hp motor.

All i know is that the guy we share the shed with got the converter as it allowed him to buy other 3ph stuff as well without having to convert each piece.

I'm sure jimster posted up about this a few years back

On my lathe I converted it to a single phase motor. On my mill I bought an inverter to run it, reason being it has 4 motors within it for various things so the inverter allows me to use any of them. However converting my lathe was much cheaper.

depends on if you plan on getting more 3phase stuff.. dose your house have 3 phase off the street? how far is the shed?

if it was me id put 3 phase in as im an electrician by trade but the easy fix and cheaper to drop an inverter in and wire your shed for 3phase outlets and just use one at a time =) other wise youll have problems like tom said ^

keep in mind the inverter costs more to run

i use an vfd inverter for the flow bench ,this allows a change in speed for etting pressure drop .

on the lathe i use a secondhand transwave inverter ,

this is connected to a 4hp 3 ph motor that just spins ,and then the lathe is connected to this motor as well .this is smoothing the phases and is known as an idler motor .

3 phase means more power less power consumption as i have been told when they hooked up my machines. Although a converter uses some power to....

you can do anything if you set your mind to it...
i rather blow it up winning than keep it together losing.

finish date set for project 1... march 2018

3 phase is more efficient.

think a single 1L motor vs a 3 cylinder 1L motor

now the 1 cly has a power stroke at 360 degrees
the 3 cly has a power stroke at 120 degree

therefor has more torque so spreads the load witch draws less amperage.

also turning a single ph motor to drive a 3 ph generator is not as efficient as straight 3 ph from the street..

trouble is cost of installing it i dont know your situation as to the install and what can/cannot be done so really i cant say much but it is better to have things built to run on "proper" 3ph not a generated "3ph"

thats my two bob...
