Has anyone had any experience of acid dipping a block to clean the water jacket out?
Cheers,
Oli

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Yep. Done several for an engine builder at work. Almost fully blocked with corrosion and general detritus.

To those who have had it done, how much did you pay? The closest one to me is £50 + vat but I have no comparison for cost!

Also it's extra if the engine is greasy/oily!

Have it properly and degreased first. I've got the stuff in the garage myself.

I use this:

Not sure if it's available in the UK.

Where did you try?

its worth ringing round some engine rebuilders and asking them, if they feel sorry for you they'll do it for next to nothing.

Smiths or regal are both local to you for a start.

Pull the oil gallery plugs before you drop it off though.

Does it damage the brass plugs as i have heads to do aswell?
Vegard Is it just hydrochloric acid you use, then rinse with baking powder and water?

It'll eat ally but I think it'll leave brass,

if you leave them in then you wont get the same cleaning of the oilways which is the main point of doing it.

Aluminium goes, but brass stays. The interesting thing is that some cam bearings perish, not all.

I just rinse with water.

I cannot reccomend this stuff enough!!!!

wouldn't it be possible to clean the block with diesel (in a big krate and with a pump so the diesel moves constantly trough the block) and put everything else in the dishwasher?

That won't remove rust and paint.

Funny. I picked up a electric "hotwater boiler" today just for this purpose. Will Get the StripAll this week :)
