Are the rear door pockets needed for strength? I bought a rolcage from minisport anf the legs stanf in the pockets. Problem is that it is a bit of a tight space to weld in strength plates. And then bolt the thing down. I they are nor no use other than loosing stuf in there i would cut thrm out ( an other gram or 2 les.... *tongue* )

Due to the shape of them they cannot possibly offer any kind of structural integrity. Most of us cut them out years ago

I seriously doubt it!

Only the overhang part, Usually you cut out the pockets to save weight which means you remove the seat and the overhang. The rearmost section of the seatbase is welded to the heel board and sills

I seriously doubt it!

There is a difference between 'structural' and a mounting point. Mounting points don't have to be to a point that is intergeral to the structure of the car.

So you can remove the rear pockets without affecting the structure of the car. i.e. it will retain the same torsional stiffness.

A question to add to this: is it possible to remove the bins and seat overhang and still get an MOT?

Sorry for the semi-hijack.

Absolutely. there is no check of the chassis other than for corrosion.

owkey out they gooooooooooo. and really only body checks for rust??? i know for a fact that i will have mot guys standing around the car trying to figure out whats missing and whats changed on the body... and know for sure that it will be banned for road use if they find it. only hope i have is that i get the dumb asses and there is no other mini in line to compare it with. *angry*

on the plus side... the mot in belgium has litle to no information about how they should be as standard form (which legally is the only form we are allowed)

It connects to the heelboard which is connected to the sills - and the wheelarches

I seriously doubt it!

so maybe bin them and just to be sure ad the strength (weight) back by a tube construction?

my bins are out, and seat base cut, had no problem getting an mot, i have a rear cage with x bar and certainly no noticeable flex in the shell

edit: also have modified rear subframe that i thought it might fail on, when i asked the reply was only structural rust or lack of metal (ie you cant cut the rust out and leave it) he also said vosa will have a different opinion of the subframe wink wink *wink*
- then failed me for not having a silencer *happy*

I added a triangular box section from the B post down to the sill just to finish off the bottom of the B post if anything, probibly 100mm x 100mm.

The fact that I added a Mk1 cross member between the B posts which stiffened up the floor pan a great deal, loosing the bins was insignificant, not that it matters anyway
