I cut all my used gaskets up in an effort to find out what the problem was. The only thing I noticed between an England one and known dodgy one was that the fire ring at the point between cylinders at its narrowest, was not as tightly packed (best description I can give) causing the fire ring to bulge out with a gap between the fire ring and the fibre core, when compressed.

I used one of these gaskets on the 16v right at the time when all the shit kicked off, but I never suffered a failure. That was the gasket I cut open. found those gaskets while rummaging in the garage for something else so took a snap shot. The onearest to you has "Made in England" embossed into it while the other doesnt say
