Well seems I am the latest TM swop shop victim. My car has been for sale for ages and fed up with silly offers from people wanting it for fuck all I have just been sitting on it, until an idea presented itself.

I was done with mini's, I wanted a change, I wanted an XR2,then I wanted an xr3i, then I wanted a triumph dolomite sprint, then I wanted an xr3i again, then I really really wanted a pug 205 gti, so it seemed to make perfect sense to get another mini.

So I have ended up with Mr Harpers ex mini 7-err shell thing

Plus a host of other goodies including a new set of Carl's spanky wheels and a force racing fuel tank and loads of bits and bobs.

Current plans are to let it sit until I get my patio and motorbike nearly finished, then In time would like to wang a modern powerplant in it and just use it as a rough drag/track car. Possible clubby front, in time may do a rear beam, fg roof and try to get some weight out of it, plus tidy it a little but not go mad

Cheers

Oli

It seems that the mini virus is too deep into you to give it up.

Well made a start stripping bits off that I know I want to replace-just so I can make an overall plan on what I am doing. Most of the work will be at the front for now so started there, the steel front was mangled and its having a fg clubman front so that's been stripped and chopped up. Also going to redo the dash and tidy the bulkhead area up so thats gone.

Also what do you think has happened here? twin bolt shell thats been drilled for single? seems to be no reinfocment round the single bolt hole and the top looks dented down/pulled in?

What I would like to do as the cross member is a bit mangled, and I would like the provision to be able to put a passenger seat in at a later date, is to loose the crossmember and existing seat mount and weld in two cds tube frames either side of the tunnel to the out sills and stitched to the floor like so

Being as there is a substantial cage there which is plated to the shell too I dont see any harm in it-peoples thoughts?

I pulled one of the door cards off temporarily, maybe a daft question but can you buy this carbon stuff ready made in sheets of something similar to chop up and fabricate things?

Good start. Are you going to make a special flat cap storage area?

A smattering of work done

Bulkhead tidied a bit and all drilled holes(dozens of em) in floor plugged up, floor red oxided, new a panel on the drivers side but seam welded

crossmembers out and new seat mount is in

lots of oversill action and surface rust action underneath, just attacking with wire brush and rust converter-hence the black

starting towards tidying rear arch tubbing

1/4 inch filler on passenger side!

Just the engine to go, all casings are bead blasted, the barrel was on +20 but has been bored for a new +40 piston and crank is +10 but needed only a polish, I have boxed/sheeted up and sidelined the project to get on with this-will get the bike done over winter and hopefully learn to ride next year

Or the short answer no-have I fook!

yes, the bike does appeal as a better winter project. I think mine will start once the workshop gets too cold for the mini - probably around August time!

Id swap the quarters on that. You will get away with pattern ones due to the tubbing. You can borrow my spot welder if you like.

I totally get what you are saying but this shell really ain't worth it, the tub strips just need seam welding instead of pop rivets and the old arch holes of which there many plugging and wedge it full of filler again, its solid but bent every which way, its got a whole different arse end welded into it, and if I was to do this really it needs a new scuttle, both inner wings and a whole new floor, and I should have put the a panel on properly not just seam welded it. Seemed more prudent to just give this a once over to slow its decay and tidy it a little, get it up and running with whatever the final choice of bastardised engine I go for-maybe get a few years out it and at least I will have a car to use while I prep a better shell, then transfer all the bits?

it depends how perfect you want it; you had a good shell before but it is a lot of work and cash to get; sort out best you can and get something on the road/track to enjoy I say. As you say, you can then re-shell later when you have got the set up right
