Ok then. My clubby has a .25 A/R exhaust housing on the turbo, if I wanted to could I just change this housing for a .36 A/R item or does the turbine wheel need changing at the same time?

in principle yes, but you need to make sure the turbine wheels are the same size as this is important.

i dont know the t3 well enough but an example is the gt17/15 have interchangeable cold sides but the turbine is smaller in the 15; so you cant swap them. So i think you can mod a t2 to gt15 etc.

does that make sense. you tried searching for t3 turbine od?

btw this is just purely me speaking out loud from my head..... it could be complete bollocks lol

Looks like you can just change them as long as the .25 & .36 are using standard wheels and not ST2 wheels.

from the G themselves

Turbine A/R - Turbine performance is greatly affected by changing the A/R of the housing, as it is used to adjust the flow capacity of the turbine. Using a smaller A/R will increase the exhaust gas velocity into the turbine wheel. This provides increased turbine power at lower engine speeds, resulting in a quicker boost rise. However, a small A/R also causes the flow to enter the wheel more tangentially, which reduces the ultimate flow capacity of the turbine wheel. This will tend to increase exhaust backpressure and hence reduce the engine's ability to "breathe" effectively at high RPM, adversely affecting peak engine power.

Conversely, using a larger A/R will lower exhaust gas velocity, and delay boost rise. The flow in a larger A/R housing enters the wheel in a more radial fashion, increasing the wheel's effective flow capacity, resulting in lower backpressure and better power at higher engine speeds.

I have just finished building a t3 hybrid for my new engine. It is based upon the s1 escort turbo. This comes with the .36 exhaust turbine housing. Also it comes with the larger trim compressor wheel (45 trim instead of the stock metro turbo 40 trim). I have rebuilt this with new bearings, 360 trust, benross worked exhaust manifold, turbo phil elbow with wastegate modded to match the elbow. I do have a couple of spare .36 exaust turbine housings but they are cracked around the wastegate hole. Saying that i looked on the ford forums and the consensus is that they nearly all crack and would still be usable (any boost leakage would be negligable). As for performance im unsure how it will be . Basic engine spec is worked head, 1380, 8.1 cr and phase 2 cam. Will have it in and running before summer i hope...

The .36 should be a direct swap for the ..25 on the metro t3

The rs turbo .36 exhaust with the 45trim wheel is a good unit. They don't feel any more laggy but gives a nice kick when on boost. .48 housing is cosworth size. I've used one absolutely awesome when rolling but abit on the large size for standing starts.

nice one ron, sounds good. did quite a bit or reasearch on it so hope that it pays off. with a large bore motor it should give good results. i will post up my results once i get it up and running and have some rolling road data
