Hello chaps,

I'm Dave (yes from Essex) and my car Ogy is my first mini.
In the year I've owned him so far he's moved from a rather sad looking sprite to something a bit more... "me"

From this:

To this:

But in the nature of all things mini, the auto gearbox promptly fell apart! Luckily a buddy had a metty engine doing nothing (auto) that I was able to keep going with, but it's only a stand in measure.

The plan is to have the gearbox rebuilt and uprated then build up a 1293 to match it, giving me a known quantity mechanically that should last for the forseeable future.

But I need more fun in my mini and that's why I'm here, I'm planning to build a low boost turbo set up to see me around the 100ft/lb & bhp figure, nothing extreme as the auto box can't take it. But enough to make a fun road car.

Expect a lot of questions very soon! *happy*

Auto turbo

that will be interesting!

for that spec keep the compression nice and high, 9:1 or more.

apparently MRA used to do uprated auto box bits

hello and welcome.

I think John Guess now does auto boxes with all MRAs old stuff.

That car is very familiar. Are you the chap in mini mag work in progress recently? In a wheel chair?

Hey guys,

Yep, that's me! Oh the fame :p

I've spoken to Martin @ MRA about the build, I initially was going to build an N/A 1330 but pulling that kind of power with the low rpm range of the auto box is pretty tricky. KC built something similar but that's KC!

So the turbo idea is looking more likely as I can build a strong, fresh block (plus gearbox) and then dial up the boost to my chosen figure, so to speak.

That's the plan anyway, haha!
I might have to drop GW a line and see if he is doing auto's now.

Thanks for the info, Joe. I'll be asking a barrage of questions shortly I imagine, my guestimation currently is to keep the engine almost stock with the turbo providing the benefit that a sporty cam would - if that makes sense.
I've just noticed you're in Burnham - some of my favourite local roads (from my biking experience).

good plan, the std metty turbo is 9.3:1 or there abouts so that's about right,

I would think a std diff would be ok too as there wont be the same kind of shock loads,

its worth adding an intercooler, as its such a cheap mod, and I'd always ditch the dizzy for megajolt or similar.

I reckon about 9:1 CR with a Gt1548 or GT1544 turbo, maybe one of the IHI ones that will uses running about 10 psi will make a nice drive

Cheers, Benross!

Joe - The intercooler is on the list, been talking to TurboNick on TMF about what parts are needed etc.
I'll probably go with a X-pin diff, just because the box is being uprated anyway no sense skipping a bit as it were.
Current estimations are using a 3.44 FD should get me to just shy of 100mph which is plenty for overtakes etc while keeping nippy acceleration.

apbellamy - already answering questions, thanks! Need to brush up on which turbo's are suitable for the application, I know it needs to be small but that's about my limit of knowledge thus far. I'm a quick learner though.

Welcome aboard.

It will be interesting to see an automatic turbo build, certainly!
