Right! One of those days you just shouldn't have bothered......

Bought a new battery for the mini, and attached the terminals. just as i'm attaching the earth, notice loads of smoke. Quickly disconnect and see its coming from the alternator wiring - i've only gone and connected the terminals the wrong way round

So what damage have I done? I presume the alternator is shot, what else could I have melted? No other obvious damage other than the wiring the the alt which is nicely melted.

Wiring is standard apart from megajolt (please tell me thats not fried!) which is on a switched live.

Also - whats correct wiring for a standard three pin alternator in a mini with the wing mounted solenoid? as the wires are melted, I can't decifer colour etc.

Frustrated with my stupidity!!!!!! Definitely hate cars today.

sorry to hear this buddy, its always the simplest mistakes that end up fucking it all up,

couple Q's i can answer, mjlj should be ok there are diodes and voltage stabilisers or some bollox in there no doubt it was switched off anyway yeah?... cool

on the alt, the 2 thicker ( brown with yellow ish stripes or something) not sure mine was soo dirty lol
anyway the 2 thicker ones go straight to the starter solenoid on the permanent live post ( direct to battery)

the smaller of the 3 ( brown with green stripe maybe ( from memory lol)) goes in to the dash where it connects to one side of the alternator bulb, the other side is switched live

hope its a simple fix for you

Thanks Guys,

appreciate the wiring guide - thats what I thought given the haynes diagram, but thought the signal wire might have to be a switched/fused live?

I'll check the main pos wire, but it looked ok via torch light last night. Just be a shame if i've goosed the alternator in the process!

argh! :

edit: for shite spelling....

Brown yellow is to the dash light. you will have a fat brown wire straight to the starter/solenoid and another wire that us a switched live

No switched live on the STD Lucas alternator. Two heavy browns to solenoid, one small brown/yell to dash light.

Thats what I thought might be the case.

Both wires appeared to go to the solenoid - is that not correct? Hard to tell from the wiring diagram. Is it to any switched live or a specific one?

thanks for your help.

Can't type fast enough today!

thanks Tom, that clears it up for me. i assume if you switch to a denso style you need a switched live? thats what I ran on my kit car.

Fair play, mine is wired for a Nippon alternator.

Just to round this one off and for future numptys....

Rewired the alternator and all appears to be well. Charging light went straight out and I'm getting 14v at the battery. It appears no other damage was caused, but I did spend a long time checking all wiring!

So all in all fairly minor in the end. *happy*

might not be the place to add this but its still a case of needing some replacement wiring harness smoke...

a while ago i some how left the horn wires off they shorted out and melted a good 1m of the whole loom as i like it all wrapped up i guess it was a cascade affect.. small wires melted the main big ones sort of thing i only noticed when the car stopped while driving on the free way.. buga still needs fixing..
