hi guys been reading loads of you engine builds and projects but i cant make up my mind about what to build. should i build a 998 turbo motor or bmw headed 998. as i work for fords in a engine build plant i do know my way around a motor so putting it all together will be no problem.

so turbo motor.
12g295 head
turbo
inlet
exhaust
etc...

or bmw head.
k100 8v head
inlet
exhaust
etc..

oh and has anyone cad drawing for the bits i will need to make.

cheers terry

another option for you....

1.2 fiat fire head, already has a belt so less work than the bmw head.

Or put a 12G940 head on the 998, much easier than a conversion and cheaper than a 295 head.

Or you could put both your ideas together and have a real terrorist to race around in. *evil* *Yes*

Life is always a matter of opinion and quite frankly, no ones opinion really matters.

Fitting the k head on a small bore head needs lots of machining. K heads are better on large bore engines. If you want to keep it 998, then short stroke is the way to go.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

so turbo motor.
12g295 head
turbo
inlet
exhaust
etc...

if its your first turbo mini .....i would go the above way ....... alot of peeps first off get sort of bogged off doing a over engineerd project FIRST and throw the towle in

dont fall in to the trap

295 heads are relatively rare and expensive. 940 heads are cheaper and more plentiful

Was a guy in Mini mag in July 2010 Issue

Had Road Rage on the front cover and In on the job section 3 pages on Darren Woodhead's Project Kylie

A 998 with a 8 Valve k100 head built between him and SC

he said

"Its been taken out to 1060cc using offset pistons, witch also ment we had to alter the crank and conrods"

Or a 1275 turbo. A not too far from standard engine put toether correclty with a few choice bits will produce good power levels on a low boost threshold. Just removed my turbo engine, it was a near standard non turbo motor build up of mainly second hand parts, made 130 bhp at 10 psi, totally reliable

I think the fact that Terry builds engines for a living means he is a little more ambitious than some of us.

Although I agree that it is a complex build, it is far from impossible. And will result in an interesting motor. All be it much less powerful than a decent 998 turbo.

good luck with the build and keep us up to dat with progress, please.

Are you set on a K head? Im sure their must be other heads out there that will fit a 998 block without too much hassle. Hard part is finding em i suppose.

What's the target ?

Street cred' of building something very special or the very good power to money ratio a 998 turbo is ?

for the work involved in fitting a k head to a 998 block and the size of over bore/offset needed to do it, you need to think carefully. piston choice is limited, because of the bore size required, which also means limited if any opportunity to reborne in the future.

As you know from being an engine builder, building an engine is full of compromises, whether it be cost, availability of parts, or ultimate use if engine. when you way up the amount of compromises needed to fit the k head to a 998 block you end up with a great engineering exercise but not necessarily a great engine.

for the cost of building an 998 engine you could be build a short stroke 1275 lump, with super light weight internals.

is the engine an engineering exercise or something to give good power?

I agree, the only propper way to do a 998 with a K head is a 970 overbored to 998.

The short stroke will work perfectly with the head, much like the bike it cane off.
