Has anyone tried - even succeeded - fitting suicide doors to their mini? I'm considering doing this to mine. Far as I can see it should be fairly simple to remove the hinges from the A column and reposition them in the B column, and move the relevant parts on the door...

Any suggestions would be helpful though before I get the angle grinder out *wink*

I've seen it done with external hinge doors. Doesn't look too bad. But I think internally hinged doors would look slicker (though require more work!).

And 1976, they are called "suicide doors" because if you are standing next to the car, with the door open, and it rolls forward, it's going to take you out... Hence, suicide because you chose it! :)

I think the door frame would fall off, it is far to weak to take the weight of the door

I'd say your biggest problem is getting the door to actually open, as the hinges swing open they tuck the edge (normally front edge) in behind the A-panel. This works fine at the front as the A-panel forms a 'lip' (for want of a better description) that allows the door edge to tuck in. At the back (B post) you have a flush 'corner'.

As the old saying goes, anything is possible with engineering skill and money...........but I reckon you will need lots of all three to make this work.

My mate has them on a split screen camper, with external hinges.
Had a play meself once on beetle,to pivot around the edge of the door I was advised to use saab(jelly mould)hinges but made my own

Think kingfisher customs do hinge kits now

Quote from Encyclopedia - "The name refers to the perceived greater danger of such a door falling open at speed."

A Mini which used to knock about Middlesbrough had suicide doors.
Had a roof chop as well.
The car was featured in one of the mags but we are going back at least 6 years now.
Sorry I can't give any more info but at least it shows that it can be done.
Never seen it on a full height door though!

Mike, go with the encyclopedia. My definition is based on conversations with car guys. Let the guy, working for a book company, sitting in front of a computer define it... *laughing*
