Take engine out, but leave gearbox in place, all in a few hours???

I find it dead easy to use either my teeth or my guide dog to remove all those 1/4" unf suckers!

well ive put my 3p woth in as this was supposed to be an answer for someone who has never removed an engine before, would be enough to put them off for life

I sort of done it once,just after fitting an engine and getting it all running,I found the half circle rubber bit from behind the timing gear on the garage floor :$

It takes an hour and a half at worst to get a min engine and gearbox out, maybe 2 if its a turbo... few more pipes in awkward places. why leave the gearbox in?? Christ it would cost more in gaskets than its worth LOL.

PS, I never both breaking balljoints, you can shifty the engine around once the mounts are off and pop each one out seperately and out it will come.

ive done it by leaving the 'box in before because i couldn't get hold of a hoist and i had to have my car finished in a weekend!

Trying to bolt the turbo oil return onto the block is a bastad and you have to dislocate your wrists a few times to do it apart from that its not too bad. lol

Next time it comes out im gonna invest in a hoist though-far easier.

I cant see how you could do this. Why go to all the effort to struggle when its easier to remove both engine and box????

im still an apprentice and i'd prefer to put the money into my car than spend loads of money on a hoist.

it was the only way i could take the engine out at the time and put it back in.

i changed my brothers engine and subframe from auto to manual by lfting the 'shell over the subframe and engine assy using trolley jacks.

im moving house tommorrow so im finally gonna have electricity in my garage, at last.

If i had a hoist it would make things much easier.

i bought a new foldable draper hoist from ebay, from a proper company, cost me £120 inc P&P

My hoist is a A frame (bit like a kids swing).
With 2 pullys.

Does the job and dismantles down into a post office sack for storage.

Cheap to make and it works :)

^^mine, ratchet strap welded to a 5mmthick 2 inch square section tube which spreads the load across an alloy ladder, supported on 2 painters tressils.

balls, off i go frantically seraching for my pis of engine removal using an apple tree, ratchet strap and some tape...

... then remember that i dont have a scanner installed

i cant see the point of leaving the box in as the time you have fart assed around trying to get all them bolts out the engine would have been stting out side the car and stripped in the same time.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

Ive just been having a look at my gearbox and picking a few teeth out,through the speedo drive hole,I reckon you could change the big ends through there
