building up my turbo motor/ mini and its going great!
got a lot done and just finished the rear end rebuild
and about to take out the front subframe and do the works to that too

now im planning on running in the car with a more sensible diff wise
but want to take it on a long run across europe

so im thinking late mpi box with 2.76 diff for top-speed / fuel economy / sound levels
had a 2.95 diff in my old mini city e 998 and that cruised at 80 no problem

question is will it make it a COMPLETE DOG to drive around town? *Confused*
bearing in mind it will be running a t3 turbo too

and after that whats everyones favorite diff to have for general fun around town/ a-roads?

i have a 2.95 in mine and it was only a dog to get moving due to the low CR and lack of torque (inc SCCR box) however it wasnt much of a problem, except for on hills.

well say im doing 1200 miles over the space of a week
what do you think would be the best compromise?
want to ideally cruise at 80ish but still be able to accelerate relatively quickly

will have 18cc omega's, 23cc head and 1293
t3 turbo cam and turbo on a metro turbo manifold and a facet fuel pump
should work out compression ratio's
fueling
the fact im running 13's and
engine rpm at 80mph

but i've pulled my lower back and on medication that spaces me out abit
so thats out of the window for the next few days haha!

before the turbo kicks in

big old fella wont kick in till 3500-4000rpm i imagine
but no idea as its my first turbo mini lol!

i would definately run the 2.75 for long distance cruising .
if your using the normal mini helical gears , you have a good low 1st gear for pulling away.
just dont run then at much more than 150 bhp,if your a vigorous driver.

Medusa + injection = too much torque for the dyno ..https://youtu.be/qg5o0_tJxYM

I'm running a modified 1293 hi comp NA motor with a 3.1 on 12's, awesome for blasting around town as well as along country roads and fairly decent on the open road too. I've tried both the 2.76 & 2.95 diff on this same motor and only really noticed a change in top end, pull away was painstakingly slow on both but once rolling a lovely drive.

Also depends on personal preference and the main use of the vehicle once it's run in. No use putting long legs on a car that's going to be a weekend warrior or you might want to do a few track days in. Once again, that's my personal opinion.

i drove to germany and back with my 2.95:1 and it got 40mpg. i was cruising at 60mph and had 5psi of boost as this was my running in period *wink* haha

mostly weekend warrior tbh
no track use as its a mini cabrio

i'm thinking about running it in and low boost for this journey 2.75
then swap out for acceleration and wack the boost up when i'm back/ june

problem is i quickly worked out the compression ratio to be just under 8.0

but hey i guess it would be running-in friendly?

aswell as good on my wallet for the long journey

Cruising I assume you mean. Not really. 80 is not much short of 5k rpm so pretty loud.

A mate described a long run in my car as like being kicked down a hill in an oil drum!

higher the number the better for acceleration and slower top speed and worse mpg

lower the number better top speed and mpg but slower acceleration

I have a 2.9 in a 998 turbo. Used daily in city traffic and fast A roads, perfect for everything.

The helical biox has a low first anyway.

Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

cool
ok had another thought

what about changing 4th to a 0.something gear as appose to 1;1?

that way you get the acceleration and tolerable cruising haha

not sure where you would get a tall gear from though!

4th gear is direct drive through the main shaft, hence its 1:1 and cannot be changed.

With an overdrive. however some 5 speed boxes have a direct drive 5th and a different spread of ratio's

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.
