I thought about doing this as well, ran the pump up with a filter before it, even with an open pipe off it, it sounded like it was struggling a bit......

ahh but it did, just in tank thats all! most do run some sort of pre filter to keep the big lumps out, doesnt need to go that fine but a small bit of muck WILL seize your pump solid, mine was only weeks old! |

You want to run a gauze prefilter. I'd go for around a 15 thou mesh size. |
