I did a quick-n-dirty rebuild on the 'box in Betty (new main bearing and genuine synchros) but it's getting increasing difficult to change down into second at speed.
It's always been a 'slow' second gear, especially when cold, but I'm guessing that the blight of a knackered second gear has struck.

Question:
How do you check to see if a gear is any good ?

Metric is for people who can't do fractions.

Sounds like a knackered baulk ring.

Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

Would a genuine Rover synchro ring fail in <300 miles ?

Are ther genuine though? I don't believe Rover would have had enough stock on the shelf to support the demand for the last 8 years, therefore, they are not genuine Rover.

anyway, Enough of me being pedantic *happy* baulk rings can and do crack. The question is, in those 300 miles, was there a period that you never experienced this problem. Also, hve you checked the clutch adjustment and operation?

One other question, did you check the baulk ring fit on the synchro cone of the gear had enough clearance?

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

If it was cracked it would crunch into gear every time, not just feel like a slow engagement.

I have broken a baulk ring in less than 300 mikes, the ones available from MS were shit. They now apparently have some decent ones.
