am i right in thinking that if you connect a standard timing light onto an edis4 ignition system, if the timing is 10 degrees (standard edis4) that the timing will read 20 degrees because of the waste spark.

What the mind can conceive the mini can achieve
MITP 2012 17.01 seconds 1/4 mile against "The Don"
MITP 2013 16.83 seconds 1/4 mile

a standard dumb light will be ok, an electronic one will probably read double as you say.

cheers joe, the lamp i have is one i borrowed off my dad, so is quite old.

i think i'll do as it says on many forums and just crank the engine with the MJ disconnected and plugs removed to check that its either 10 or 20.

It will still flash with the sparks but twice per rotation and should still read 10deg if thats what it is set to but if you watch closely it will also flash 180degrees later where there is no markings on the crank wheel, in reality you can just use it like normal unless it is one of the newer electronic types that might get confused

You can use modern timing lights with the tachometer and degree advance indicators, so long as you set them for zero degrees. they work just like any other timing light then.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

If you connect the light to plug 1 then it will fire for 1 and 4. They both fire at the same angle relative to No1 TDC. Therefore it will show the correct angle, but flash twice as often. So the angle shown will be corrct, but if it estimates rpm that will be double.

Simple method.

Test it at a 10deg load site and a 20deg load site

If it's reads double for both then you'll know it's ok. Or if it reads 10/20 for both, again you'll know it's ok.

9.85 @ 145mph
202mph standing mile
speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will
