Some boxes use gaskets, some use silicone.
DO NOT fit gaskets a a housing that uses silicone as the extra clearence will cause the diff output bearings to spin in the housing.

If your unsure what was there originaly, then measurement with an internal mic is the only way to be 100% certain. Other wise just replace like with like.

hmm yeah, i been looking into this recently

there seems no definative date.

anyone know that the bearing 'preload' is supposed to be?

if bearing is same as bolted up hole it will spin. so holes gotta be smaller than bearing, question is, how much?

I believe that if it's held on with bolts, it's RTV / Silicon sealer. If it's studs and nuts, it's almost always gaskets - but there was an overlap I'm sure!

If unsure - do the internal measurements with it clamped up tight with no gasket.

It should be round. If you fit gaskets and dont need them it will measure oval.

Assuming thats what you mean!

As above, just compare vertical to horizontal readings with it bolted up without the diff in.

If you want an actual measurement, read the code on a bearing and google it. SKF etc. all have bearing catalogues online which will give you the bearing outside diameter and the housing should be the same, maybe a thou less to give a bit of nip, but certainly not bigger.

The early stud/gasket vs. later bolt/RTV mentioned by TD isn't foolproof because some people (like me) don't like bolts tightened in aluminium so use studs/nuts on the later RTV type casings anyway.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???
