sat here playing with the ECU, and a thought crossed my mind...

I'm using the coilpack from a ford, so should i be using spark plugs from a ford too? Is the coilpack going to burn out mini plugs too quick?

With the above in mind, whats the best plugs to go for on a turbo with a coilpack?

I'd say you'll be ok with mini plugs

Been running my squirt for 2000miles with NGK BPR6ES plugs, no problems so far.

cool, also what leads are best use on a coil pack. I've got the ones that came with it but they are way too short.

I just grabbed a load from the scrapyard and fitted the best ones Serria and escort I seem to remember. My coil pack is mounted on the flywheel housing so not to far from the plugs.

You should really use ford plugs with the correct internal resistance to work with the coil pack...

But I bet mini plugs will work just fine!

Resistor plugs are only used to stop RFI/EMI and in no way enhance or reduce power output. And this also applies to resistor leads. So fit what you like if you don't mind the radio noise but make sure you get the correct heat range for your application.

As well as reducing electrical noise for radio, television and mobile telephones etc, many modern ignition systems require resistor plugs to stop electrical noise from interfering with the vehicle's on-board electronic control units (ECUs). If non-resistor plugs are used in place of resistor ones, the result can be malfunction and in some cases immobilisation of the vehicle. Resistor spark plugs should always be fitted, therefore, where specified. NGK resistor spark plugs contain a single ceramic monolythic resistor of approximately 5000 ohms. Because of the type and construction of the resistor (ie no springs), the problems of vibration and sudden changes in temperature that can occur with some other brands do not apply. The function of the resistor is to reduce electrical noise generated by the ignition system. The most effective place to situate a resistor in the high tension circuit is as close to the spark plug as possible. This makes the spark plug an ideal place to house the resistor. Because the resistance value is only approximately 5000 ohms, there is no detrimental effect on engine performance, power output, vehicle emissions etc. It is also a fact that many motor sport world champions only use NGK resistor spark plugs. In nearly all cases - apart from some very old low output ignition systems - resistor spark plugs can be used in place of the non resistor versions.

Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe.

I've only ever used the resistor plugs (not ngk mind), but these damn yankees still don't seem to have adpoted them (resistor plugs aren't used in race engines over here it seems) - which means I've got to purchase my USA manufactured champion race plugs in England, then import them to the USA - so that's twice I'll be paying import duty.*frown*

What is the bleedin sense?

Doody - have you personally experienced any ECU damage - or is it mostly rogue signals from the plugs that give false / missed crank signals or interfere with other sensors basically sending the ECU dud infoirmation?

Sounds like you should bring a large and empty suitcase (well apart from the famous green jeans) with you to avon park, and take it back full of goodies......so what else do you miss big time from here in the US?

Two big suitcases are already planned - luckilly I'm with BMI frequent flyers, so I can take two 25kg cases, as opposed to the conventional one case!

what do I miss?

Nice Bread, Fish and Chips, Curry, English Mustard, nice beers / lagers (although i've developed a taste for Corona when sat in the sun), night clubs / pubs, my mates, easy girls, need I go on?

Back to the subject....

I haven't bought an NGK plug without an 'R' in it for years. TBH I thought they didn't make them any more.

Never noticed a differance (in performance or lifetime) with the 'R' so always used them.

Tom / Iain - you've gotta do something called 'groundwork' over here... clearly I'm gettign old as I'd rather just drink beer and leer.
English lassies are the best in the world IMO.

I personally haven’t had any problems running both types of plugs.
With regards to noise I tend to see more raw output from the Bosch knock sensors for example when not using R plugs but nothing to worry about.
Champion currently make plugs for the company I work for as specials and talking to the guys from Champion they do recommend the R plugs if you’re not sure of the susceptibility of your electronics to RFI/EMI output.
I’ve never had any issues as long as you use good screened cables for your harnesses and make sure everything is tied to ground to give it a fighting chance of dumping the RFI/EMI it's going to see.

For road/race car applications I would always use R plugs to air on the side of caution and if they have no ill effect on performance then it’s a no brainer.

How do you know if a plug is a resisitor plug? are the champion C57c's resistor plugs?

I have tried ordering c57c plug from my factors, (where I always get my plugs from) and they told me that champion have stopped doing c57c and they are sedning me the model which have superseaded them, it will be interesting to see what they are.
