I'm using a old techedge wideband and display. I want to be able to use the display and connect the wideband into the ecu. The problem is they both use the same port out of the wideband. There was a off the shelf splitter that could be bought direct but they no longer sell them due to the age of the unit.

Would it be possible to make something from a standard RJ45 splitter? Wiring and electrics don't phase me but electronics aren't my thing!

Any help appreciated Ron

Looking at this it is just a straight splitter the rj45 splitters on ebay are the same internaly as this

Ive got one of these between ps3 and xbox

I have used the circuit above (the second one Brett posted) with normal DB9 connectors to make a splitter cable for my MS2.

ie, just using two diodes in the Tx lines of the external devices to prevent contention and it worked fine.

Interestingly though, on my TechEdge units (2Y1s) that come with two serial outputs as standard, they do it ever so slightly differently.

(RXA/B in red is the equivilant of Tx for the external devices and as well as the two diodes they have two 22k resistors in parallel with the diodes, otherwise it's the same once you ignore U5 and all it capacitors etc)

I would try the basic two diodes first.

Final - but important - point, the common RJ45 splitters (£2-3 on eBay) are meant for TBase 100 LAN communications, not RS232 communications, so will NOT have the diodes built in and the pin number to pin number connections are VERY different.....

You might be able to cut one open and modify it but what I would do is buy some cheap keystone jacks, wire them together as per Brett's second diagram and add the extra resistors if it is unreliable.

EDIT, or cut up a couple of cheap LAN jumper cables if you want male ends rather than female.

EDIT 2, Note in the second diagram from Brett pin 8 does NOT follow through to the PC, TechEdge specifically use it to power their display, that is not the stanadrd use for pin 8, so if you make up an adapter do not let pin 8 go to your ECU.
If the ECU uses the standard RS232 protocols only pins 2,3,5 need connecting. Pin 8 probably won't be connected to anything but if it is, it will be connected to the second Tx port on the comms chip which is NOT meant to have 12V coming into it....

Also, just out of interest, which ECU are you using that accepts TechEdge's serial datastream ???
The Innovate LC1 serial datastream is much more common - Jean's IOx range accept it for the Megasquirts so I presume there are other ECUs that that accept the LC1 as well, but when Jean looked into the TechEdge data he said it was similar, but not the same.

I've got a three way splitter like the one off eBay you can have and chip up if you want?? I've never used it and got round my problem a different way.

Don't think this is what you would want as you would not be able to use use both at the same time. Might be use though.

Cheers for the helps chaps that's great. I will get some parts ordered and make something up rather than using the eBay plugs.

Do you have any recommendation for a diode? As I said elwctronics aren't my thing!

Rod I'm using a Adaptronic 420c ecu which I think has now been replaced by the 440. The ecu is made in Australia so I guessing that's why it accepts the techedge datastream. It also accepts innovate and several others in the settings. I am connecting it upto a 2ao wideband with a LD0 guage.

Cheers for the help Ron

to a large extent a diode is a diode.... they just come in different current and voltage capabilitys (harder to destroy)

the IN4148 listed is cheap and available, you could also use an IN4001

just make sure your a normal diode not a zener diode or schottkey diode.

Ron,

If there is a Maplins near you, the code is QL80B for the IN4148 (but 42p each !!!).

If not PM me your address, I pay about 4p each for them.... and I'll just post you a few.

EDIT - interesting about that ECU, I'll have to investigate - not that I'll use one but surprised they found it so easy to use the TechEdge stream (although obviously both being AUS must help).
