Hi all,

Basically I have a 1960 mk1 that I am rebuilding, now my question is do I go back to a original look with a modified a-series engine, which will be a 1293cc with a 7 or 8 port head or do I go for a road/rally look with stripped out interior, cage, fiberglass front end, boot and doors, with the same modified engine?

All help is really appreciated

Cheers

IMO keep the bodywork original, will be worth more and in the years to come .......... but you need the good guy engine in

Ben that is exactly what I was thinking. Its still all parked up in my garage and have not even started the project. Although when it comes to the engine, I will be giving you a shout

I wouldn't worry, unless its a cooper s you may as well hack into it and build something nice.

If my shell ever meets an early demise I will be going to town on an early shell.

It not a cooper or s, just a standard morris 850.

But also I wanted to find out:

What is better a 7 port head from SC Components or Med or a Minispares Arden 8 port head?

This will be going on a 1293cc bottom end and in my mk1?

Cheers

I'd be agreeing with the general consensus; keep the body as standard as you can. Mk1s are getting rare and, from a value point of view, are only going to go up.

With regard to finish, basically anything goes as long as it could be returned back to original without major surgery. I've had the same thoughts with my early estate and have a plan piss off the purists without ruining the originality

The Specialist component head is brilliant, far better than the Webcon / MED head in my opinion. I've had both and think the SC head is far superior in many ways if running fuel injection. I can't comment on the 8 port, but looks more costly compared to 7 port.

On the other hand if you are after a period look and after webers the MED head may be a better bet. Just bear in mind the MED head is very racey and needs big cams and revs to work. Low air speed due to massive ports seriously affects bottom end torque compare to a 5 port. The SC seems excellent thought out the rev range. It also responses great to milder cams. In my case a SW5 with 1.3 rockers. Pulls 90fl/lb from 3-5k, and 97bhp@6200. This are not massive numbers, but it drives perfect and it pulls from 1500 revs. Bhp as increased by 14bhp over a well sorted stage 4 5 port with just head change and rolling road. Plus the sound is brilliant, quite quiet until the loud pedal is fully pressed.

With the RE13pp camshaft, the SC head seems to tick all the boxes, great torque throughout and 120bhp. If I wasn't turboing my 7 port, I'd have this cam fitted.

But for 3k it's also worth consider the twinkam conversion.

I think it depends on what you are planning on using the car for.

A fully soundproofed car with a nice interior is much more useable than an empty cabin which leave your ears bleading after 5 minutes.

I'd keep any road car steel (unless like mine the whole thing is GRP anyway!)

does that work the other way? If you have a plastic car, you get the desire to cut huge chunks out and replace it with steel *hehe!*

I'd stick to standard body & interior. No Araches, fully Sound proofed, rubber mounted, helical drops. After 5 mins in my striped out turbo, I just hate it. My next project will be a fully restored standard mk1/2. Or Moke

If you based it on madmk1 car, you can't go wrong. I love that car.
