Hi Guys,

I have recently purchased a suck through supercharger kit to put on my engine. I currently have a 1310cc stage 2 engine but one of the cylinders is scored so I have been given a great quote to get it bored out to 1330cc. I have also aquired a Mini Speed Stage 4 Head that I am planning to use with the supercharger. I am now looking at what is best to buy to get the most amount of power out of the engine....

- Would I get more power out of a HIF44 or a Weber DCOE 45 (I have both and both inlet pipes so its a decision between the two)
- What Cam would people suggest going with?
- Would you uprate the gearbox eg. go with straight cut box etc/ is there anything I should check for whilst I have the box off the engine any places of excessive wear? (I currently have a X-Pin diff fitted)
- What pistons should I go for? (What dish size?, Forged?, Specific brand?)
- Should I go for lightened and balanced crank and conrods etc
- What clutch and flywheel would be the best? Turbo?
- Is there anything else I can do to get more power out of the engine?
- Also I am running 10x6 weller wheels with A032R tyres do you think that these will take the power or would I be better off going for a 13" wheel set up?

Basically I have a friend that has a Stage 4 MPI that he will be supercharging, we use the cars on the odd sunny occassional day for a good blast around and we intend to do a few track days if possible. I would like to try and get the upper hand on him even if just slightly haha

Any help would be appreciated *happy*

Cheers Paul

Well for the highest power output a turbo is the way to go but that isn't for this thread, plenty of info search on here.

Back to the questions

Carb- reading about most people report a bit higher output on the 45. Maybe it's easier to setup? But you wil need a hole in the bonnet. You do Benifit from a shorter inlet which is an improvement and might help with the fuel being sucked in on overrun.

Cam
I would look for a supercharged cam, may be a vmax one or re13t at 112lca

Gearbox
You don't see many people Above 135 bhp so if you stay standard then it will depend how you drive. 4 pin diff is a good idea.

Pistons will depend on your cr, I aimed for about 8.8:1 but you need to do some research here and check the cc in your head. A measure and maths job plenty of info here.

Engine components
Unless your going the whole hog there probably isn't much gain here. I want for a wedged balanced heat treated crank and std rods.
Balancing should give a nice smooth revving engine something I wanted in my build. Lighter components will make it rev faster. I noticed a big difference with a light flywheel and back plate.

As for more power you will be limited to the charger I wouldNt go any more than 10psi on the eaton is widely reported there isn't any gain above that.
I would look at some water injection which can be done on the cheap. It will help keep the intake temps down and of your a brave man you can advance the timing a little, once you rely on it and it stops you will Lickly be looking at liquid pistons... But then that's like most things :)

Oh I would invest in some arp bolts for the rods

Have fun with the build.

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

For the clutch:
The standard turbo clutch isn't good enough. The torque of a supercharged engine is massive! Been there, done it...
I switched succesfully to an non verto grey + rally plate.

And last but certainly not least: make sure your ignition timing is OK! It's better for your pistons :)

Or search RTS; less stress on the thrust bearing.

Ignition timing is a good point; Megajolt or Nodiz are popular

Id avoid the weber and go for some sus

Sure the weber provides the potential for more power but part throttle responsiveness will not be as good due to the fixed jet design

The supercharger delivers a wide band of torque so best to exploit the characteristics of the setup!

As above, if suckthrough, keep the intake track as short as possible to avoid laggyness and fuel pooling and carb icing.

Make your own inlet and use some bike carbs?

I bet my first wank came quicker than your first mini turbo

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

I have been reading that bike carbs are good but why? Are they quicker in response? I have some but they are somewhat small. ( they are 1, 25's comling from a gsx 400f race bike i eummm chrashed) i do have 4 of them.)

you can do anything if you set your mind to it...
i rather blow it up winning than keep it together losing.

No, they will be newer and likely to have less wear, they generally have a newer design depending othe type you get, things like, Butterflied throttle shaft.

I lied the fact that they didn't rely on o rings for the choke.

They can have some down sides, you will need to find one big enough, you may need to fabricate things like the throttle and choke take offs, and mounting options.

I liked mine the hif needed constant attention I guess as it stood a while, even after rebuilding it, the choke would leak etc. it used to do my head in. And the dash pot oil getting hot and cold changed the fueling slightly.

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

Hm wont be using these than... they are from the mid 80's. But it all does sound interesting and since i can get my hands on quit some bike carbs...(the breaker is just around the corner) but then it would need a custom plendendiumulum? (Sorry for asking these questions in your topic pauly)

Sorry I was talking about using the carb before the charger.
