An old topic I know. However this is my second failure in the same odd way.The symptoms are only running on 3 cyls from cold start for the first few seconds.Taking the head off revealed a failure from the coolant hole between 2 & 3 on the tappet side, but no apparent failure of the fire ring.I tend to get afterboil on shutdown which pressurises the coolant system, more so now I have a 20psi cap on.Whilst running there is no obvious sign of gasket failure such as clouds of steam, loss of power, emulsion in the oil.Anybody offer any thoughts/advice on this please? Sounds like you need to keep your coolant moving after shutdown. On 11th Feb, 2015 robert said:

Sounds under torqued. Have you checked your wrench? Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

I've had a head get pinholes in the valve seats that gave exactly the same symptoms On 20th Oct, 2015 Tom Fenton said:

Hmm,gasket failed in exactly the same way as the last one.Torque seemed a bit low as I removed head, but torque wrench spot on.Head flat,so put on new gasket with silicone sealing spray and torqued to 75NM.Will rebuild and fire it up with NO coolant press.then retorque and fit aux. coolant pump. What's the theory behind starting it up with coolant before retorquing?

To let the surfaces of the headgasket get hot and seal. I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

Bit of an update.Back together and retorqued head after 30 mins gentle running and 1 hour to let all the oil drain down. Most nuts moved about 1/8 turn up to 1/4 turn.Seems ok so far.Fitted an aux. water pump from a sprinter van between heater matrix out and turbo in.Also fitted it to a timer so I can run it on 10 mins after shut down.Tried this after a quick blast - the fan came on for a bit as usual, then the temp gauge climbed slowly until the fan came back on about 5 mins after shutdown,so seems to be working. Also modified the coolant cap with a weaker spring - now about 5-10 psi instead of 20.
