hi, im having problems with my megajolt setup.

basically i had this running last year fine without problems, however when i now plug it into the laptop it will not communicate.

i have not changed anything etc, the wiring is still in the same place, plugged in properly, laptop settings the same as far as i know etc

the green led is on on the mj module.

my brother borrowed the usb to use on his na engine, but used this on his laptop

so basically when i power it up, the error 'timeout reading cylinder count' error comes up

i have tried changing the 'com's, but the selected one is the only one recognised

im not the best on computers, i have gone through some trouble shooting guies etc that i have but to no avail.

could the use of the usb on another computer/engine have changed things?

im thinking about re-installing the usb, but have lost the link to the software. is there any other software that could be used to do this?

when the usb is removed from the computer it shows the 'could not open port' error, as when other coms are slected.

i have tried all usb compatable ports on the computer

at the moment im stumped. and very frustrated.

i need to get this sorted asap so that i can get the engine set up.

i guess the next step would be to purchase and install another usb cable.

i really hope someone can help

cheers, dan

Have changed the port no, and also done this on mj, makes no difference.

Try going into device manager and delete com port or ports and the restart computer and see if it plug and plays the com ports again, you may then have to reassign a port for mega jolt..Alan

When the lead is disconnected it shows error 'could not open port' as expected. When plugged in it shows error 'time out reading cylinder count'. I have deleated the us , re installed it, changed the com number but still no joy. Im really gutted about this, am wondering if its the megajolt unit itself? Please any more advice is appreciated, thanks again

Iirc. You need to make sure that the auto assigned com port in the driver matches the one in the mj software. These adapters can be a little hit and miss some times. Depending on your OS it will assign a new com port if you plug it into a differed USB port.

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

graham I have assigned a different com for the usb. also re matched and reassigned the com no after re installing. and also matched this on megajolt. if this is what you mean?
it has made no difference.

as I said it was all good and running, so somehow either the usb is no good, how the usb is set up or the megajolt has had it? jut need to find out which it is so I can get it sorted.

cheers, dan

Google suggests two results. It's the USB adapter or the software/ firmware version

Make sure the version of your tuning software matches the firmware in your MJ box.

Buy yourself a decent USB/RS232 adapter. Not a Prolific one, but a FTDI one!!!......... The Prolific adapters are problematic, yet people still persist in using them because they are cheap.

only other thing to check is that the shitty telephone cable is not nicked or kinked, and all the pins on the connector of your MJ box are straight and even.

Have you tried taking the MJ box out of the car, powering seperately and trying communicating with it? or even using a computer with a native RS232 port

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I will take a look tomorrow colin, thanks for the input.

The usb is a trigger wheels one. I might try another one and see whats what.

My bro runs megajolt on his na a series, i plan to see if his laptop communicates with my mj unit, only problem is that hes away for another couple of weeks. I might try firing up the old pc, if it still works, and try with that route. I havebt changed the software or the mj so should still work, its all the compatable/ correct version. Also will check the cable. do you neef specific software to particular usb instals? Will update this tomorrow. Cheers everyone for the input so far

I have also had the wires pull out of the mj serial lead inside the 9pin rs232 connector. It would be worth opening it up to make sure it's all connected

As sprocket says that USB adapter is suspect if you didn't buy a good one, I took the advice on trigger wheels and bought the one they recommended, I know it's in there interest to sell there's but been that many people had trouble with communication between the MJ and computer, I thought pay the price and be safe.. right, have this sorted now. thanks to everyone who got back to me with advice. it turns out that the lead from the megajolt to the usb was faulty somehow. there is no obvious damage, changed it for another one and it now works. again thanks a lot for the input on this chaps, its really appreciated,

me too. if you know whats wrong then you know what has to be replaced. if not its very frustrating, especially as it worked fine not too long back.

I had visions of me replacing parts one by one until I had to replace the mj unit itself - im glad that its sorted too! cheers, dan

If you look in the about menu of the configurator it should give the firmware version of the MJ, a simple check you have comms.
