Has anyone come across anything a bit more hardcore?
I'm trying to strip the engine lacquer off the block and bell housing, and nitromors is just crap. It softens the top layer and moves it about, that's about it.

I found tesco own brand paint stripped was far stronger than nitromors when I did parts of my shell.

Put a really thick layer on and work it in with a brush, and before it dries apply another coat.

The new nitromors stuff isn't as good as it used to be. They removed the dichloromethane from it as it is banned under the EU, if you can find some "old" stuff it should work, but it is worth saying that it must be banned for a reason so use it carefully

there is non toxic stuff that does work, but it is not cheap.

40 quid ish for a gallon

grid blasting and engine parts with cavities are IMHO not a good idea unless you use soda that dissolves instead of some stray grit popping up from some black hole (after flushing it 20 times) taking out the engine a few weeks later.

That sir, is not rust, it is the progressive mass reduction system

I can't really blast it as its assembled, just missing the head, timing cover, bell housing.
It needs to be a liquid type thing so I can brush it on and not disturb too much of the engine. Next winter it'll likely come out and get rebuilt, so I can dip it or something then. I just need to get as much of this shite off as possible for now.

Mark, did the POR stuff take it all off, or some of it?

Thanks for that Matty, I might pop in tomorrow to see how much it is. Got to be cheaper than the 8 quid that nitro shit was.

I've only done it with nitroshit so far, and I left it on 40mins as per the instructions.
I was quite hopeful when I started putting it on as it seemed quite quickly to melt the top layer on lacquer, it just didn't really do much after that it seems.

I've had issues getting the original engine lacquer off in the past; it was as if it was part of the block!

Unfortunately there isn't much out there that works really well because of the new laws.

Acetone can work well on some paints, but its like water and is pretty nasty stuff.

Have you tried pressure washing it off?

I had my block acid dipped, they left in the tank overnight and there was still traces of paint but they were unwillind to do it any longer, i know my local powdercoaters blasted and powdercoated a block once, so you could have it carefully blasted

I think however, I wouldn't really want to do that with an engine that's built?

As for pressure washing, no. But I figured if paint stripping hadn't done much with it, pressure washing wouldn't.

I think I might have to resign myself to the fact this block will have to be brush painted, and when I rebuild it next it'll have to be dipped.

I'd lash a load on and leave it for much longer.

Also, I wouldn't do it with a built short block.

as above,

cover the headface ect with gaffa/masking tape....spunk a load of nitromors on and cover it with clingfilm so it dosen't dry out and leave it... then just move the spunky puddle about and recover till you get to bare metal

Thanks boys. Well, would you Adam and Eve it Dev, that's just what I've been doing. Took bleeding ages, but I've got the front down to nearly bare now.

I think tomorrow eve I'm gonna job a load more nitroshit on the back, and as Joe says, cover it up with cling film. Despite what it says, I reckon I'll leave it over night after a second coat. It's not gonna harm, as whatever happens I'll be going over it with the drill and wire brush.

Thanks Joe, I've already got everything covered and all the holes plugged as best as possible.

Best one I've found is by a company called langlow, it's called strip away pro. It's like the nitromors of old!
