Hi,

I rebuilt my carb, installed it and now the car won't start. The spark is good, so is timing. The plugs are dry and there is no petrol smell. There is plenty of fuel to the carb. I checked float level and that seems fine. The little valve has the rubber cone pointing towards the top of the carb, I wondered if this was the wrong way around?

I'm feeling a bit of an idiot now and was wondering if anyone could help?

Cheers,

Jeff

A photo would help diagnose the problem Jeff

Here are some pictures. A new problem is now that I've taken the bottom cover off the seal has somehow grown and I can't get it back on. Joy

OK, it's only letting me upload one picture at a time. The engine doesn't even cough.

One last go with the images...

I've just had a thought (dangerous). When I got the car the 3 threads for the dash pot screws were stripped. 2 were tapped and one was helicoiled. the helicoiled one broke through into the carb body. The engine ran like this but I'm wondering if it's leaking a bit and stopping a vacuum sucking fuel up from out of the float chamber. Does a carb even work that way?

The seal growing is something you just get used to.
Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. I work on the principle that anytime you remove the float bowl, you should be prepared to replace the seal.
Call burlens and get a few in the post - so you have some on-hand.

The "installed pictiure" is not that obvious - do you have the carb plumbed in correctly?
Was there oil in the carb? Show us a picture of where the top of the jet was in relation to the bridge.

I think it's plumbed in properly, fuel goes in just above the jet adjustment screw. Everything else is blocked off really. I had the jet flush then turned it down 2 full turns but I've tried it at every height. I've tried with and without oil

One end of the part throttle lean of pipe connections looks open to me. The one on the carb throat.

It deffo wouldn't start with that open.

Well spotted wil. The brass fitting near the front needs blocking.

That throttle cable looks a bit iffy too. Is it 90degrees to the throttle?

No that it matters I expect but the choke cable isn't connected either by the looks of it

Thank you for the tips. The brass fitting at the front was unblocked when it was running before but the cab was in such a state it may have been blocked internally. I've put a dab of silicone in that thread I was on about and I've blocked the fitting. Frustratingly I have work now but I'll let you know tonight if it works.

The throttle cable does go nearly 90° but is much smoother than the one on my can which doesn't. Odd. No choke at the minute but I've tried operating it by hand while someone cranks and it made no difference. Ta again

Just an update, I did those two things and the car coughed. Sounded like my timing was out so I remembered I hadn't set the valve clearance since Steve did my head. A bit embarrassing but now the car is alive! Mot soon!
